Looking at spraying my interior trim soon and just wondering if i can see some pics of various designs from 3rd Gen owners that have sprayed their interior.

I have the S1 TJ black over charcoal VRX interior and looking at maybe spraying my trim a candy purple.

Would be great if i could see some other colors and which parts people generally spray.

Cheers,
Dan

I had my plastic bits painted the same as my exterior - Sable Black (Black with green metallic)...

(ignore me - you meant the vinyl parts - not the plastic bits :iough:  lol -@me)

I sprayed the door trims in mine... needs a touch up, but VHT vinyl dye worked a treat.

tried the door cards, failed horribly so i threw the door card out ~ there was still heat trapped in the door card, and it hadn't all released causing the paint to lift all over

I purchased some red vinyl today. $14.95 per metre from Spotlight and its quite wide. Will be fitting it on my spare door cards tomorrow.

Hey, im sure most of you already know this, so its more of a DIY guide for someone who never done it before.

I have done mine interior as picture below.

I have used vinyl from spotlite, works really well. Use spray glue on your exiting fabric then gently wrap vinyl around it, you will need to make some cuts on the other side to get rid of wrinkles, use something strong, my dad is a Gyrocker so they use this CSR spray can glue designed to hold down metal corners to gyprock sheets. About $20 will last you for all four doors.

Okay spray painting, two common type of vinyl die out there. I believe autobarn stocks VHT, supercheap has another brand, Tried both, i would definitely recommend (one from auto barn VHT), it give much richer color, so its more like a paint not die.

Make sure surface is clean (its an absolute must), use wax & grease remover, then wash it all of with some soapy water, then rinse. Make sure its dry. No need to prime for vinyl, picture you are looking at is taken few weeks ago, the actual spraying was done about 2 years ago, no peeling or wear so far. This paint takes a long time to cure so take it easy for the next week after painting, i didn't so i scraped the paint of when putting it back in, after some time paint is very very durable. (oh yes you MUST remove the whole door trim, with all windows controllers, speaker covers & such, masking tape will not work, that's of course if you want good finish).

As a guide you will need about 2 spay cans per door.

If you are going to paint rough plastic bits (underneath steering wheel & glove box), i would recommend to use plastic primer as this vinyl die does not stick very well to plastic. The rest of the plastic bits, like window controllers door handles, centre console, ash tray i sprayed by using normal touch up paint, then clear cote, priming is a good idea but if you prep the surface good, i.e sanding & cleaning, not 100% needed.

While painting remember patience is the key, if you get a run DO NOT try to fix it straight away (trust me) that will ruin your whole job, continue as nothing happened, let the paint dry (im talking couple hours at least, sand it back until its gone & touch up that area only. Use smooth sand paper around 1500-2000 as a final prep, you can use rougher before that.

Hope this helps.

Well....ahhh...what can I say.... You like red aye? :P

To be honest to the OP I'd say its only a matter of time before it'll all peel off again. Few knocks and scratches from people using the car and it'll peel. The best if you plan to use vinyl paint is to add a layer of clear or a final coat to sell the paint on. But if you don't do a good job it'll be nasty. To be honest I'd actually recommend to buy a dodgy old insert off any old car for dirt cheap from the wreckers and use that as your test subject. You really don't want to stuff up on your car, because it'll be a b**** to get off and the plastic will never be the same.

Good luck with it - hope it turns out brilliantly :)

Yes priceless advise, i will only cost you 50-100 buks & will save your original bits incase you want to take car back to stock.

Oh yes, & dont spray clear on top of vinyl paint (i.e on door trrims) = BIG FAIL. I have done it the first time on one door, had to redo the whole thing. See vinyl paint has additive to make it heaps flexible so it does not crack (to a degree ofcourse), normal clear cote is not, every time i would put some kind of pressure on it, fine cracks in clear cote would appear everywhere, took me a whole day to sand it back.

Its all good. When i fitted the VRX interior (complete interior) i kept the original exec door cards.

I'll get some pictures up tomorrow hopefully, they look pretty good so far.

Just a quick bit of advice to those recovering their door skins, i found that the vinyl isn't as thick as the original material. The original material had padding behind it and i found that with the vinyl on the inner door handle surrounds dont sit to well.

Its quite shiny but not too much, id say semi-sheen would be a good way to describe it. similar shine to stock vinyl (which is painted aswell)

Tested the VHT vynyl/carpet dye(?) a month ago and it did a top job on the floor mat in question. Endeavouring to re-colour my entire floor carpet and seats. As you do.....

did you just spray it straight on or did you use a brush and really brush it into the carpet?

Had a glove on so worked it in by hand - short pile so was easy to do.
