hey tonight my brother and i just finished the rear box and i thought i take it for a quick run up the lane and back to see what it would sound like. i got to the end of the lane and all my light dimmed as i put my foot on the brake and the car stalled, as i thought i would. It has been running off the battery and need to be clutch started.
i wanna know why?
i have change the alternater ages ago when this first started and didnt do a thing.
my thoughts are maybe my battery is stuff and not taking charge, my charge wire from the alternater is broken or my alternater is as stuffed as the one i had in.

Okay whats the "rear box" number 1 that you changed
test your battery first up, if its lower then 11.7V its totally dead. Give it a charge, start car, and test if its charging. May be as simple as the alternator belt is loose not allowing the alternator to charge?

yes that is correct i think it could be just the battery

can you start it from the battery or does it always have to be clutch started? and also the car just dies while your driving? is that right?

it can be jump started and runs but only with lots of revs

sounds to me like your alternator is not charging your battery. but if you have replaced that than it probably isnt the alternator itself. check the belt like tuffy suggested

hrmm sounds like it could be a battery problem. Do you have a battery from another car that you can try out in it to se eif it runs better? also check your dizzy/rotor button/spark plugs and spark plug leads?

How old is the battery?

Could it be the regulator - its been a while, but probably this is a component on the back of (half mounted within) the alternator.
Going back to basics, check the battery terminals and clamps are REALLY clean - pull clamps off battery posts and give a thorough clean with a battery tool. One of our first Gens used to bail us up occasionally with "no power" symtoms, and it was always poor contact between battery terminals and the battery posts. Mike sure the inner faces of the terminals are clean, and clean the contact surfaces of the battery posts as well. There are "wire-brush", or "scraper" type battery tools avail, I think Peter_pan put up pics in a thread a while back.
Try a multimeter across the battery posts, then try across from terminal to terminal - see if there is any significant voltage drop, might indicate poor contact. Also, consult workshop manual etc for testing alternator output and whether battery is getting enough charge (which might point to a stuffed voltage regulator).

check that the wires at the positive and negative clamps arnt damaged. i had this problem once. half of the wires had broken off.

For cleaning battery posts and terminals, For posts, use some emery paper or medium grade sandpaper. for the terminals, file them out with a round file making sure you file them to the correct angle (they slope)

Thing is mate, you shouldnt just replace stuff and assume its at fault. If you get your battery load tested, it will show you if the battery is stuffed (as well as a hydrometer test, $4 from super cheap) and if that passes, then just check if the alt is charging. Hopefully its just a battery but yeah wouldnt take long to do a few simple tests.

Bloody went work on my car today and I noticed when I started to move it the volts was right up so I disconnected the battery and it stayed running so for sone unknown reason my alternater is work. What the hell happened I never touched it or done anything for it work. The only thing I'm worried about now is if it stops working again where do I start looking for the real problem
