1UZ-MX83

Hi guys,
Firstly, I'm actually a Toyota owner *dons fireproof suit* (Have an MX83 Cressida with the 1UZ-FE 4.0lt V8 in it).

Anyway, my wife is looking to buy a 1992 Pajero SWB 4WD, and I was thinking of putting a 1UZ into that. However, I'm not sure it'll fit, so I was wondering if anyone could:
1) Provide me measurements of the 3.0Lt SOHC 6 which the Pajero uses (Same as early-mid 90's Magnas/Veradas, right?)) I'd need length x width x height and,
2) Does anyone know if they are exactly the same (mounting hardware for north-south Vs east-west aside) as the FWD Magna/Verada unit? I ask this, as the engine currently in the Pajero has had a fair amount of reco work done to it, and I am thiking of selling it to recoup some of the costs...

Oh, and if anyone knows the internal dimensions of the Pajero's engine bay, that would be even handier than point 1. :D

Apologies for the Pajero questions here but hoped you guys may be able to help.

Nah, you're alright.

Yeah right. I reckon you really drive a Camry :D
Don't worry, we got a guy at work who drives a mighty Crown.

Well, I was told that it wouldn't fit without engine mounts being modified. Obviously it's 90 degrees out of whack but engine mounts were different. Dave?

My folks have got an NH Pajero which we got in early 1993, so I'm guessing it'd be the same as the one your wife is looking at, although ours is LWB.

Anyways, I'm not very mechanically minded, but if there's anything in particular you would like me to have a look at under the bonnet of the Paj, just let me know and I'll help out where (and if) I can. I've also got a Haynes service manual, so I could probably look some things up in that if you like. Just let me know.

Damien.

nope! exact same as our 6G74 but mounted N/S and different (edit)cams tuned for low down torque...

and 1UZ-MX83... i've seen a toyota V8 4.5L (1UZ???, also coulda been a 4.0L if they make that?)engine in a Triton (very similar engine bay and setup to Pajero), so they do fit... and boy it flew.... wanted to buy it, but they wanted to much money

The hardware for the pajero is a little different (the smaller stuff, the block looked the same), maybe using more specific bits for the different uses (ones made for slow crawing more than the other! )

Thanks for all the replies...
:)

FWIW, the Toyota engine codes (as regards the more modern V8s, anyway) are:
1UZ-FE - 4.0Lt quad-cam alloy V8 (As fitted to Lexus LS400/Celsior, Japanese Crowns, Soarer/SC400 etc
2UZ-FE 4.7Lt quad-cam cast-iron block/alloy head V8, as fitted to 100-series Land Cruisers/Lexus LX470s
3UZ-FE 4.3Lt quad-cam alloy V8 with VVTI, as fitted to Lexus LS/SC430/Celsiors etc.

Speaking to some blokes today, they don't reckon it will fit...But I know of at least one person putting a 1UZ into a Hilux, so you'd reckon if it would fit in that....

To the bloke who has the long wheel-base Pajero at home, I'd ask you this:
Have a look at the engine bay of the Paj. Can you get an idea of how much room is "left over" after the V6 has been put in there, esp. at the front of the engine. (Between the engine and the radiator)
Also, If you could measure the engine bay for height/width and length, that would be fantastic!

(I don't want much, do I?

Well, they might be but out of whack 90 degrees.

These are some very approximate dimensions of the engine bay:

Width (at shortest point across the top of the radiator) ~ 1300mm
Length (from firewall to headlamp) ~ 760mm
Height (I had no idea how to reference height, so I went from around the top of the front diff to the lowest point of the front-end) ~ 500mm (but probably less than that)

As for room, well there's not much space between the radiator and the engine, but you've got a bit of space on either side (even more if you take out the battery and so on). We've got triple air horns mounted between the battery and the firewall (with the compressor) and there's still space on that side. The air filter is on the left, as opposed to the Magna where it is on the right. I don't have a digi cam on me at the moment, but I have some black and white photos of the engine bay (including the underside) out of the service manual if you'd like me to scan them and post them up. They are from the 3.5L model, but the setup is the same.
