Hey all,
i am trying to get my hands on an ashtray for my car,
the one i currently have has the accessories socket within the drawer of the ashtray Pics of my current one (http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=25872&id=1577797301&l=0e8399be8f).
i want the style where the acc socket is seperate.
does anyone know what model this comes from? or maybe the part number so i can order a new one?
i need it to be black in colour, and fit my TE.
Any help would be awesome.
Cheers
Alex

Alex,

The "drawer"type of ashtray you have is highly-regarded amongst AMC members, if you have nothing on the console it looks slick. Commonly your style was fitted in Verada's with a woodprint finish. As yours is a plainer finish, it must have been in some sporty or fairly late-model variant? Generally the older cars and plainer trim levels will have the style you seek - they should be a dime-a-dozen.

Swapping the panel with seperate ashtray and "on show" cig lighter socker is easy - the panel simply clips out after you remove the lower-console panel *(the bit around the gearstick).

However, the wiring is a little different between these styles - yours has a multi-pin connector in the car loom which gives power to cig lighter and illumination. The other less-fancy style (with seperate cig lighter) has two bulb holders for illumination of ashtray and the ring around the cig-lighter, and then two connectors (power, earth) for the cig lighter itself.

Would be a good idea to get a piece of the wiring loom from a self-serv wrecker, so you can adapt your wiring into the seperate bulb-holders (T5 size) and connectors for the cig-lighter (crimp connectors of the 'female spade" type would do for this). Once again, the vast majority of cars had the style you seek, so getting a piece of matching loom out of a wreck should be easy to find/cheap.

I have swapped the nomal ashtray in the ralliart for verada type, as long as you have some of the loom it is an easy job. If you need a hand when you get one PM me.

Sorry to bring up a bit of an old topic, but I got one of those one piece ashtray and lighter bits from a wrecker. How would I change it over from my current one (standard two piece) to the new one?

Bearing in mind I'm not an auto-electrician ;)

pull the old one out and compare wiring :) then you have an idea of what you need to do

take pics of both and post them up here, someone will be able to help you

you'd be best off getting the plug and some wiring that connects to that 2nd one, so that you can solder it (or electrical tape it :P) to the wires on the other side... hopefully someone will be able to tell you which wire from the plug does what

You definately need the plug to suit the ashtray. Make sure you get enough loom left on to attach to your current wiring. Then cut off you current wiring and attach the loom. I'm pretty sure the wires are the same colours, but you will have extra wires as there are 2 lights on your current setup. I have done this to my wife's car, so if you need some help drop me a PM.

I think rather than cutting, using splice connectors might be easier. Nothing to cut and all u need to do is clip the splice connector onto the original wire and put ur 'new loom wire' into it and clip.
