View Full Version : LPG Warranty on 380
Hi there all. Picking up Series III 380 tomorrow. Am going to put it on gas asap. After much research, i have found that the only 'factory backed'- whatever that means- not even Mitsubishi can tell me straight- is the IMPCO BRC Sequent 56 system.
Does anyone know or had previous experience in fitting this system LPG?
Eastside Mitsubishi charge $4350 to fit it but are not sure if engine components damaged by the LPG system is covered. Other reputable places can do the same system for $4100 which suits me much better but I cant find out if they install the recommended system if it would still keep full Car manufacture Warranty.
Any comments appreciated....:mits:

Your warranty is intact, unless the damage is caused by the modification.
The Impco system is Fine, engineered for the 380, and switches over to petrol under high manifold vaccuum, i.e. overtaking etc. Very sweet.
The others won't do this.
Thanks for the fast reply Shoot.. Do you know where there is anything in writing about this? Today i have called 4 Mitsubishi Dealers and also the Mitsubishi hotline. One dealer told me that if even they fitted the recommended lpg system, the engine (and everything in it) may not be fully covered because its still and aftermarket fitment not done in the factory at the time it was built.. I wanted to hear them say "Yep if we fit it- its all covered". But they could not. . .

You must check if your head is the one that is OK to run LPG on. If you look on the head above the O2 sensor at the front you will have either one or three drill holes. If you have three, congratulations, your vehicle is compatible if you have only one, sorry it isn't and if you fit LPG you will void warranty.
There is a notation in your manual in regard to LPG. Dig it out and have a read. It doesn't say much but it is important.
I think the dealer that told you the motor wouldnt be covered is full of it.
It does have 3 holes- The salesman showed me. I will look in the manual when picking up the car tomorrow so thanks for that.

You should be right then. I know that the IMPCO system has been widely fitted on the 380 and if there were a problem with warranty then it surely would have surfaced by now. The manual does say that LPG can only be fitted on the DB and ES. I believe that this is because they are the only ones that run the head with the three holes.

My understanding is that all 380 lpg conversions were post factory. Indeed when I bought my sx s3 earlier this year the salesman noted that the sx was lpg compatible and that they could organise a factory endorsed kit to protect my warranty. In any event see the attached link which summarises my understanding from a number of articles - http://www.lpgautogas.com.au/index.cfm?action=News&unq=115&Type=R
Mine is a SX series 3 also. I saw that article before but notice... “We haven’t heavily promoted LPG until now,” said Mr McEniry. “The 380 engine has been LPG-adaptable, but we didn’t have a conversion that had the full backing of the company. The new 380 Series III LPG system, however, is a fully endorsed and approved factory option for all automatic transmission models.”
The part "approved factory option". I think that this is what the car dealer was pointing out.

ive converted a few 380s. we give a 12 month warranty on the lpg system only. because we are not a mitsubishi factory backed installer dealers can refuse warranty if they want to be stingy. the only way (if installed corrctly) the dealers can tell the difference is the installer id on the lpg compliance plate and the liquid line betwwen the tank and gas lock up front will be different. on factory backed installer fitted system the liquid line will be a steel line while a non factory backed installer system will be copper. i personally prefer copper line as there are less joins.
i have the system fitted to mine. the only complaint is the converter and injectors are to small. at high revs and engine load it will switch back to petrol as the gas pressure drops due to converter to small. impco say it was programed like that but our sources say otherwise.

The Impco system has 3 year warranty, the 10 year drvetrain warranty stays if done by a Mitsi dealer.
It is an outstanding system.
Does anyone know what the benefits of the Impco BRC 56 system are compared to other systems when mating with 380's?

Ffactory approved, no check engine lights, can be supercharged, preserved drivetrain warranty, great fuel economy, neat integration with the rest of the vehicle.....automatically and seamlessly switches one cylinder at atime from petrol to LPG.....
How's that?
Im sold Blackstar. I will never get the preserved drivetrain warranty though because that "remains with the original owner" - like what are they going to do with it after the car is sold!!

Not quite true.
We had the Impco system fitted at Agostino Mitsubishi here in Adelaide. Ran great for about 6 weeks, then got a CEL. Took it to our local Mitsi dealer (Australian Motors Mitsubishi at Morphett Vale, where we bought the car and get it serviced) they checked the code and it was that one of the banks was running lean. They cleared the code and told us it may just be the computer getting used to the LPG, and if it happened again call Agostino's and see what they say.
Around six weeks later same thing again. This time we phoned Agostino's only to be told that it is a known issue, and to take it to Southern Automotive for them to update the firmware in the LPG system.
Took it, they did it, and six weeks later it came on again. Took it back, they kept it overnight so they could do a tune for it with the cruise control as well. Six weeks later it came back on.
This time Southern Automotive contacted Impco, and were told there had been another firmware update. So the car went in again on the 30th June and it has been fine since, including a run up to Broken Hill using cruise control most of the way.
Here are a couple of my posts and related threads about it:

Anyway, I am still overjoyed with the system. It is great, cheap to fill up, seamless, and you cant feel the difference between LPG and Petrol. I was just really annoyed that it took so long to get working properly.
Cheers

listen carefully....
get them to replace the lowerr injector seals...what you are reporting is exactly the symptom that happens under warranty.
perhaps the injector rail mod hasnt been done also.....definitely will fix it.
cheers
Does anyone know if you can get liquid injected gas system for a 380? The price and its benefits? Anyone have one of these systems?
I was told by Dealer that the SX was designed for possible LPG conversion and that warranty would be O.K. The LPG engine has the 3 holes on the front of the engine (mentioned earlier) and the engine name is in red on the rocker cover.
Before you go ahead check which tank you get fitted. One converter showed me his own car that had the conventional long tank fitted. There was very little boot space left. He recommended a 'doughnut' tank that fits in the wheel well. It holds less than the conventional tank but I get almost 330 kms from a tank driving around town. Consumption is regularly between 14 and 14.5 l/p/100km. My tank has a nominal capacity of 63 litres and an effective capacity of around 45 litres.
I've also bought a Falcon space saver wheel as it takes up less space than the 380 wheel . The doughnut is a bit dearer but well worth it. I can fit in a set of golf clubs and buggy as well as the spare wheel.

But a space saver wheel urggh!! They are really terrible, but I guess that is the price you have to pay when you want a donut in the boot lol!!
It is a shame I have the wrong head on or I may have done this.
