quick question which is opinionative i guess.. if im gonna be running a sub in my boot, option audio 6 splits in front... what should i have on the back dash for a better sound... 6x9's or 6.5's etc
ive heard alot of stuff about how people dont like 6x9's in back because it puts out bass
tell us what configuration you think will sound better in my case.
thanks

I have Focal 6x9's off the deck in the parcel shelf, but they are inaudible.

how does that work with passengers in the back seat? i.e. ive got sub cranking and front speakers blaring, sounds good to me, but can rear passengers only hear sub? or do front speakers travel more than i think?

who cares about the passengers :P
rears are only used to fill the holes, mainly for background noise
a well tuned system with rear speakers would have them on minimal gain, meaning if you fade everything to the rear it'll be really soft and not soo loud
but if you must have rear speakers then coaxials are ok to use

As stated, just get whatever and fade them down - they should be barely audible from the front. A $100-150 pair of 6x9s would be more than ample. If your bass completely drowns out your rear fill, chances are your front stage is going to sound pretty shitty anyway.

Try sitting in the back of the car with the stereo on and find out? lol
If its just for rear fill I honestly don't think it makes a difference whether they're 6x9"s or 6"s. Either way you should have them high passed at 100hz or so at lowest to ensure they don't cross with the sub, and faded out so you can only hear them in the rear, I'd have 6x9"s just because its a royal pain in the rear end to make up baffles to fit 6"s unless you can be bothered going to find the adapters that came in the rear of higher end 2nd gens.

Rears are used so I can listen to something when I take my amps out to go to the drags lol

Not much point in putting speakers in the boot unless you want some tunes for someone someone sitting in the boot lol
You're not going to hear the speakers from inside the cabin, so the only reason you'd do it is if you wanted a 'show' install. I still wouldn't bother though, I'd put the money saved from them towards better subs/front speakers. Subs go in the boot because of their size, and because they play low frequencies, they're not directional - you'll still hear and feel the bass from inside the cabin.

According to my regular passengers my front speakers sound great, not as good as if you were sitting in the front seat but I don't really care about the people in the back seat, thats why they are there in the first place lol

I have 6x9s in the back mounted with my sub boxes(2 x 12'), but i have a wagon, so its half for looking good and if i want sound at a party i can just open the boot and it works well.

I've got a set of MB Quart FTA169 6x9 speakers in the rear for my passengers. Yes, I don't have many passengers sitting at the back, but when i do, at least they get to hear some music, besides the bass beats and exhaust drone...
I may not hear them much from the front, but then again, they are meant for people sitting at back anyways.

IMHO if your going to spend money you might as well spend it on upgrading the front speakers and then using the current fronts in the back. I highly doubt you will see any improvement by changing the rear speakers.

G'day mate,
i'm going through the same thing, Once you srart going above 138dBL the volume of air from your subs can effect the proforance of your Speakers, And what the main reason is: The rear speakers dont have a plate between the boot and the inside... so the pressure and volume of air that your subs are putting out.. force the speakering upwards Which makes the speaker Distrot...
So lefting the speaker up and stickerflexing the boot port.. should stop the problem
as for which ones better, 6x9 or 6.5s... depends :P
6x9s are going to complete the bass range so to speak.. But you can push a 6.5 abit harde because there balanced so i've heard, and there sound is clearer :eeek:

I have a set of Alpine 6.5 coaxial's in the parcel shelf running above 80hz.
I have them faded to about 15% majority of the time.
However, when I have passengers I fade them up to about 70%.
Easy enough to adjust.

None at all dude in a parcel shelf. Rear doors are a better place if you must. HP the rears at 150+Hz 12/db oct to take them out of the phase race between the front and sub.
My mate has a Commo wagon with over 100WRMS ea side in his front stage and a single sub, most people can not tell there are no rear speakers and the sub blurs vision.
Yeah I dont run rear speakers anymore.
Removed my soundstream tarantula's 5". Actually improved the bass - not as droney anymore either hahaha
