Sorry for the dumb question but how do I tell if the motor in my Magna 1997 TE is a 3 or a 3.5, have checked all the paperwork and under the bonnet and I can find nothing. Need ti know as I have to get a set of Timing and exterior belts and water pump.

Nope TE and TF's were 3.0L only.

The TH models were the first magnas to have/offer the 3.5L in the magnas

KF was a different story, that had a 3.5

KF is a verada not a magna though

If it says 6G72 at the start of the engine number its a 3.0 and 6G74 is a 3.5 to answer your question.

OP, look at your engine number as your engine could have been changed at any time. If it starts with 6g72 is a 3.0 and if 6g74 is a 3.5

and the 3.0 was an option in the TJ, but very rare to fine one.... Erik has the 6G72 in his TJ i believe

It was standard early TJ's. The 3.5 was optional.

Just to clarify the 3.5 became standard as a running change to TJ in about 2001 from memory.
