Looking at carsales car research section, the KR's engine is different to the KS's, its all alloy
rather then alloy head and cast body (KS) and it does not have separate power reading for
using PULP as opposed to the KS which has a 4kw power increase and 9Nm torque increase
going from ULP to PULP.

Did you advance the timing?

How do you do that REDAV?? is that how you get better economy/performance out of a magna running PULP? I know in previous cars I've owned, just filling up with PULP made a noticeable difference.

I've been running my newly aquired TJ on PULP since first fill up... and I can't remember what it ran like before that - that was still in the "driving like a granny" stage of new car ownership.

You need to use a timing light and something else. PM Killbilly, he did it. In practice I think you advance it to a point where it starts pinging then dial it back a few degrees. Thing is that that point will vary from day to day. It's a lot easier to ping on hot days than cold. I'd also point out that I don't really have much technical knowledge so taking advice from a wet-behind-the-ears kid like myself is frought with danger.

Well, Shell Optimax was the only PULP that gave me better economy. From what I understand it's a denser petrol but I'm not sure how that helps. Using higher RON fuel is required for engines tuned to used it through advanced timing, or have higher compression and for some turbo applications. However with the 2nd gens having knock sensors, it's entirely possible for your engine to increase power as the quoted figures suggest because of them.

I can't say whether I've gained performance on PULP or not. I'd doubt it and if I have, I doubt my bum will notice the difference. It might however give a more even idle which could trick me into thinking that it's better than other stuff. Mind you I've noticed since switching to BP lately that the car is running nicely.

Do the 3rd gen magnas come equiped with a knock sensor? I think I've read some where that they dont?

Not that I'm aware of but I think I'll ask Mitsu.

They definately DON'T, I have confirmed with Spare Parts.

No they don't. I've checked this with Collins Mitsubishi a couple of times. Although, one of the tech there that I was speaking to thinks the export models do.

2nd gens have a knock sensor, 3rd gens dont.

Sorry to be an un-educated git, but what does a knock sensor provide exactly that not having one does'nt?

I am guessing, a knock sensor will sense how much ping or "knock" is happening in the engine and adjust the timing/revs accordingly and possibly output a fault code? Is this right or way off???

Hi every1,

I reckon PULP does make a difference, whenever i use normal ULP the car idles fairly bad, although it was never smooth...But especially when i use Optimax the car idles much better, its much smoother and feels more powerful...but u pay for it.......

I use to think that aswell, but it could always be the placebo effect  . I've just made the switch back to ULP as petrol prices have just gone up as I'm sure you all know, and apparently they're gonna keep going up, where at 90 cents a litre so far up here and rising  .

well on my tr, PULP does make a lot of difference!
yesterday i filled up on BP ultimate and i can say the ride was smoother and revved nicer, as for KW i can't say how much i gained but i guess it did make an overall difference!

I started using PULP only since February and the only thing I've noticed is that the oil is clear even after 3.000 km. Before it was getting darker after the second day after it was changed.

Nice observation - thats gotta be a good thing in my opinion!

Have tried optimax or synergy 8000 for ages being a month on one then back to ulp the next. I think sexedtf summed it up nicely with the placebo effect.

Have to study it so hard to try and pick a difference at all, even in relation to economy and if it is that hard to pick, is it really worth the extra 10c a litre?

With out a knock sensor/ automatic ignition advance your not going to get much benefit out of higher octane fuels, other than the cleaning additives.

With a higher octane, you can run higher compression, and / or more ignition advance before detonation occurs. Thats where the performance gain is ... its not more bang for a litre, just better tuning options.
