:lurk:
So I've seen a few of these on ebay, namely:
7" IN DASH CAR DVD IPOD PLAYER LCD Digital TV DVB-T GPS (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/7-IN-DASH-CAR-DVD-IPOD-PLAYER-LCD-Digital-TV-DVB-T-GPS_W0QQitemZ330362104370QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAU_Car _Parts_Accessories?hash=item4ceb1daa32&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14)
and
7" LCD IN DASH TV MONITOR CAR DVD GPS NAVI IPOD 701 (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/7-LCD-IN-DASH-TV-MONITOR-CAR-DVD-GPS-NAVI-IPOD-701_W0QQitemZ290353059726QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAU_Car _Parts_Accessories?hash=item439a64178e&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14)
Just wondering if any of you guys have seen these, or know if they are any good.
Im tossing between one of them, or finding a decent touchscreen 7" double din screen and building up a car pc.
Cheers

The topics be brought up a few times and the answer is usually 'don't do it', the user interface on these units is usually pretty bad and cheap looking and the sound quality normally is pretty bad AFAIK. From what i've heard the fail rate is pretty big on these import units too, and as you would imagine warranty is probly pretty hard to claim.
If you have a look at some name brand units at say JB or something you'll see they have come down alot these days and you should be able to find a good brand system for a simular price.
If you are able to find an ebay job with a nice UI/menu system thats got decent sound quality and doesn't blow up in a couple of months then i'd say it would be a win. As they often have features like bluetooth and GPS which to find in a local unit would cost alot more.

My younger brother bought one of these, which he ended up sending back.
The interface was terrible, the GPS didn't work, and it looked generally tacky.
There's reason why it's $250, and an equivalent from Pioneer is $1000.

Good points. it'd be nice to find a good double din 7" touchscreen panel, and a good pc sound card with 3 pre-amp outs :p

Said this to a couple of people now.
Try this site, brand names, cheaper than here, and come with more standard features (aka no need for attachments like for bluetooth) Only prob is wit GPS, but get ur self a free aus map set, till u save up some do and buy the aus version from the Aus company of their US counterparts, applies to JVC/ Alpine/ Kenwood and Pioneer, might be a bit tougher with Boss/Motevo etc. as they are USDM, but if you email their customer help, you never know.

Sweet, i'll take a look :D
Definately stick with the name brands when it comes to double din DVD/Multi play head units. There are some cracker units that are new release from Pioneer, Sony and JVC which you can get some for around $850-900.
There is also Kendog (sorry Kenwood) if you must, but their units come out a bit pricey compared to the others & without being any better IMO.
For around the $1500+ mark there is a good one from Pioneer and also Eclipse (Fujitsu Ten) that have the whole kit with navigation.
But IMO if you want bang for the buck, get the best price on a 7" double din head unit & seperate Satnav & ask for a deal.
If those options are out of your budget, then go to some of the specialist and see if they have an ex demo model or any New superceded stock that they want to get rid of.
I've found that you can squeeze a good deal out of JB hifi if you've got cash or plastic.

probaly one of the best all in one units would have to be the eclipse AVN range
i've got the older model (AVN6000) and think its great but would look into the current model
these retail at about 2500 bucks +

At least you have the go kart track up there to keep you entertained! *lol* One up on us!
Back on topic, my new HU should be here mid week, just chasing up an adapter loom for the Elgrand so I can plug and play, and see how it all goes!
Will keep you updated on my progress.
Cheers, Greg.

Yeah, where I'm not overly interested in SQ, just want all the features! It's going into a 8 seater van with 4 speakers in stock locations, no amp. As long as the playback is of reasonable quality, and easy enough to use, I'm happy.

I bought a cheap one $230 from hong kong,
been in for about 1-2 months never had a problem with it, sound quality is better than the 1 din sony headunit I had,
for $230 you can't go wrong

Got mine today, just waiting to get an Aerpro AP7550 adapter harness to get it all working in my Elgrand.
All works apart from the GPS. The HU isn't finding the software that is on the SD card, but it should be something simple to get it working. In discussions with the seller already about this. Only minor.
Will link up some pics in a minute!
Cheers, Greg.

Hmm interesting stuff. I was just looking at Jaycar and for approx 240 they have a single DIN DVD/CD/bluetooth/USB headunit that supposedly has 65W RMS per channel (cough) and I was thinking of checking one out see if they have it running a demo.
Definitely cheaper than the ~$800 JVC unit I like.
eeeww on those pics. Do you think you can resize them a bit smaller please? I've got a 1680x1050 screen, but still have to scroll so far sideways it's hard to see the pic.
Anything around 800 pixels wide is generally good to look at, otherwise 32, 26, 31 works for me too. :)

i have that unit, and lets just say im waiting for it to really die, the face has loosened to the point where it stuffs around when i press a button, and the discs need help to eject, not to mention that the user interface is less than friendly

Probably not really on-topic, but I found this from a link in here, and I was impressed..
Sure it's only got a 4.3" display, but the other feature set is pretty good with Pioneer quality.
http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_19637_Pioneer+AVIC-U310BT.html
CD, MP3, WMA, AAC, SD, USB Reciever. Built-in Bluetooth and GPS Navigation
All that for $439USD.
At current exchange rates, that's only $485AUS.
