Hey Guys,
Was just wondering how much it costs to replace a cat (roughly) on a TL VR-X for parts as well as labour...
Any advantage in hi or low flow cats? my engine is stock...
I'm only asking cos it gives a slight rattle and occasionally lets off a fart smell and was wondering if its just worth waiting until its completley stuffed or replacing it now if its cheap.
Cheers

The rattle could be the engine pipe (a dividing plate within the pipe could have broken off and found its way in the cat which results in a rattle), best way around to fixing it would be going either Pacemaker extractors, HM Headers (ralliart extractors), Hurricane extractors, RPW extractors, etc as they are mods that eliminate the engine pipe section thus not going to have that issue again, the engine pipe replacement from mitsu can sometimes work out about the same as replacing with extractors.
As with a replacement cat, I have had my cat replaced with a 3inch Magnaflow metal cat for $280 @ Radiant Exhaust

Hey thanks for the help! :)
UPDATE: I was driving back from work (5 min drive) today and when I got a whiff of what smelled like burning rubber as I was parking at home (oil temp was normal), I got out and it was coming from the exhaust. It was really potent and really strong!!! I wasn't hooning either too or from work. I havn't started the car since.
Does that sound like the catalytic converter? any other places that will do a 3" Magnaflow apart from Radiant Exhaust? cos its a bit far away from where i live...
I'll be following this up on Saturday as ive got uni tomorrow...if my car makes it there.... Anyone know the price of the stock (Mitsubishi) cat approximately?
Sorry for all the questions...

ok i finally have some free time...been very hectic with uni...anyway, I was wondering if any of you Vic guys had some places that would diagnose my problem (i just want to make sure that is it before its replaced) and be able to replace the cat with a high flow one for under $300...any ideas? I live in Glen Iris, so anywhere around there...Chadstone, Malvern, Burwood, Mt Waverley, Glen Waverly etc....would be good :D As Boozer suggested above ill most likely 3" Magnaflow...

its not a necessity to go a 3inch cat. You just can, most place will talk you into a 2.5inch cat, it would probably make sfa difference. But thats what i paid at Radiant Exhaust $280. Maybe a tad of a drive for you, but its mainly freeway driving to Radiant Exhaust for you. I just recommend them as would TUFFTR, we both go there for exhaust work

The important thing is to ensure the flow isn't reduced by the joins. I'd imagine many places would suggest a 3" cat on for instance a 2.5" exhaust because the flow isn't going to be reduced when they weld it in. As long as you get the tips of the cat flared when its fitted to ensure the welds don't reduce flow below 2.5" there wouldn't be any difference at all, if anything it could be an improvement over a 3" not having a section of your exhaust with larger space creating a pocket of sorts midway.
