Not sure my self, I am taking my sedan sound system and putting it in my wagon, I use to do audio install back home, so once I figure it out I'll post back bout it.

Got a crash barrier? I custom-made some pods that bolt to the barrier for mine. Pic's very old, circa '04 or '05 I believe!

Did this job about a year ago, 6X9's into a TS Wagon. I used large plastic standoffs from autobarn so that only the magnet protrudes into the hole for the (at a guess) 6 inch speaker holes that were already cut into the trim when I bought the car. They tilt the speaker upwards. They mount to the side, then the speakers mount to the spacers. Sounds ok for a pair of eBay speakers. You could just cut away at the metal, but from what I saw when I took the sides off, there would not be enough metal to mount the speakers solidly.

I've also seen speakers (6 inch) mounted in the tailgate, but putting the speaker wire above the headlining and through the rubber tube at the top right of the tailgate would be a pain. Also, one model of TS came with two speakers mounted in the headlining at the back edge. Also 6 inch speakers.

I think it was a verada (was there a verada wagon?), had speaker pods in the roof of the wagon.
Got a pair from the wreakers a couple of years back. Have to pull your roof lining down from the rear to bolt them in (bolt holes already in the Exec), & cut a hole in lining where the speakers go, but they sit flush with the lining & still give you full access to the cargo area :)

Did contemplate putting them into the tailgate prior, only problem I could see at the time was the weight of speakers. Too heavy & you'd have to get stonger tailgate struts to stop the tailgate dropping in ya head when open *LOL*

It was probably a Verada wagon I saw that in at the wreckers. Mounting speakers there didn't appeal to me. Mounting them in the side gives the speakers a larger air volume to help with low frequency speaker response, but you got to watch for cargo damage to them as you load/unload/go round corners.
Mounting 6 inch speakers in the back doors could be another option - haven't looked at that though.
