Hi as stated from above I have a stalling problem with my car. it is a 2.6 with a 5 Speed manual, and it's got one problem, everytime I stop at lights or intersection the car will just not idle, and then when it stops I hear a click from the passenger side footwell, then every now and then it will idle after restart, but not too often...any ideas??

Cheers
Heath

welcome to the club mate

As for the stalling, its a common problem. replace your Idle Speed Control motor. this helps the car to remain at one idle and compensates for fast idle dropping and when the car is under load (power steering, hard braking, compression braking then clutch-in)

try replace it and let us know:)

Hi Ian,

Thanks for the welcome mate, good to get some info from these forums, really does help. speaking of the Idle Speed Controller motor, where would a man fin that on his vehicle? and are they hard to change??

Cheers

it's behind the throttle body,(where the accelerator cable goes too !! )_ and just behind/below where the plastic air tube from the air cleaner assy joins to the throttle body..Held in with 2 bolts , unplug the wiring plug too ! Attack it from the drivers side of the car...

Changing this was the best advice I got from the forum when SWMBO got the TS a couple of years ago ....

Before you go off and get a new ISC, has the battery been disconnected at all recently? If so, may just be that the computer needs to be trained as to what idle settings are required in different situations. You can fast-track this by going through a series of different load situations in a safe environment (eg. driveway, car park) rather than in the middle of traffic (the worst is mid-roundabout, when braking and power-steering are both going, don't want to lose power then as you also lose power-steering).
Anyhoo, if battery HAS been disconnected, try driving a couple of metres forwards and backwards, with combos of heavy braking, heavy steering, lights on, high-beam on, etc. It will probably stall a few times, the idea is to push it to just above the point of stalling, and see if the ISC begins compensating properly.

Oh ok, yeah the battrey has been disconnected because it has just had a new clutch installed, but come to think of it the day I picked the car up it done it a few times then too, but i'll give it a week and see how I go.

New clutch? I bet your car has done around the 200,000 Km mark, this is the time that the ISC motor dies too. Been there done that, 2.6 manual here too. eBay is worth checking for a new ISC motor. If it works turning the air conditioner on should see the revs go up about 200 rpm, if it goes down you know it isn't working. Turn the air valve screw on the throttle body anticlockwise to raise the rpm to 1000 at hot idle and the car won't stall = make it more driveable while you get another ISC motor.

Might help, mine was V6 but was having similar problems. Turned out to be the computer. If you do not find anything else perhaps pull the unit out, take off the cover and have a look inside for any burnt parts

Hey Max, yeah I brought it second hand for $800 bucks, not bad nick, I think it had done 246K when I got it, not as much poke as my r31, but hey it's a wagon for the family lol

Oh yeah, it's a 3.0 v6. I found one item on the throttle body with 2 hex head bolts holding it on and a 4 pin plug. I also found a six pin plug part but with 3 securing philips head screws.

Errrm, which one?

Magnas are new to me but after I washed the engine I had the same problem with it stopping at idle. Could hear the click of the relay on a 94, 4 cyl as the engine shut down over on the passenger side of the cabin. I checked out the idle up motor and it was u/s however the real problem was the connection plug on the distributor. When I pulled the plug off the connector on the distributor it was full of green gunk. Cleaned up with contact cleaner and scraped out as much as I could with a small screwdriver and has been fine ever since. On the 94 model the connector points up so it is easy for water to get in.
