Hay all

I heard a magna a while back after he chopped his rear muffler off and it sounded really nice. Well today went down to the exhaust shop got my rear muffler chopped and replaced with 2.5inch piping and put it on an angle and sprayed back looks good and sounds very nice. With a nice note. Ill post vids tomoz.

...got my rear muffler chopped and replaced with 2.5inch piping...hey kurt, did the exhaust shop say if that was legal (to remove the muffler)?
Also, how loud is that thing now?
An under car pic would be interesting.

Shop said something about it but i forgot to be honest. Well its as loud as my old magna with a full 2.5inch catback with a zetti rear muffler and a resonator. Witch was pritty loud but not ridiculous. I was expecting it to be really loud. Theres a pic of under car.

It is illegal to have no muffler on a vehicle. It is also highly unlikely it would now pass noise emission standards.

Yeah probably but its definatly not lounder than my old previous system that i mentioned up top. Actually slightly Quieter.

I had a cannon fitted, which is essentialy rear muffler cut of, it passed ADR noise level without a silencer, lol by about few db only though. Have a look

cannon mufflers to reduce noise levels.

i went from no mufflers to a rear cannon on my evo which dropped the noise level by a HEAP

yes & no, depends on your cannon, some are simply staigth through without sound adsorbing mesh inside, it basically your exhasut but just made wider at the end....

But that widening can help cancel out some noise - it's just like a resonator.

I removed the big heavy muffler off my old Eunos and went for a drive around the block - I didn't think it was too loud, but my wife said otherwise. It didn't sound right though, I'll admit that.

You've got me wondering about mine now - if the muffler is mounted with a flange and 2 bolts like the Eunos, then I'll take it off one weekend for a test run.

We already know that a free flowing rear muffler normally releases a few kW that were choked up, so maybe no muffler would free up a couple more :)

It's not illegal to have a car without a rear muffler. It IS illegal to have an exhaust systems without any silencing device even if it falls under the legal noise limit.

I presume you kept your middle muffler which would keep things at an acceptable level. When I changed my stock muffler to a lukey, I had a play around with nothing at the back, it did sound good but would be too loud for everyday driving for me.

Do mufflers only do sound or pollution emissions as well?
Sorry for the Noob-ish question.

Not atmospheric pollution as such. They reduce noise pollution! lol

only do sounds. The catalytic converter is for emmisions.

Are you sure about this? Can you show me the legislation please?

BTW, I didn't say anything about a rear muffler, I said muffler. Meaning including centre, any, all.

I don't have the legislation on me right now (in my other pants sorry) but after 8 years of exhaust fitting you get to know the rules inside out when inspectors drop in from time to time. Also it doesn't have to be a muffler in the system it can just be a shit load of resinators if you so choose it to be.

Yep, you are right mate. I never doubted ;) I just have a thirst for correct knowledge.

Found the legislation...

TRANSPORT OPERATIONS (ROAD USE
MANAGEMENT—VEHICLE STANDARDS
AND SAFETY) REGULATION 1999

Division 3—Noise emissions
˙Silencing device for exhaust systems
136. A motor vehicle propelled by an internal combustion engine must
be fitted with a silencing device through which all the exhaust from the
engine passes.

The only mention of mufflers is that all mufflers on a car must be free from leaks and holes.

Cheers for that mate. :woot:

Based on this bit, just a header and straight through pipe counts.

136. A motor vehicle propelled by an internal combustion engine must

engine passes.

Trust me, a straight through pipe is better than nothing - my exhaust broke off just after the collectors from extractors, before the flex joint (FWD car) and my god it was worse than any truck I've ever heard!
Was also gutless after 3000rpm, or it was so loud I couldn't use the accelerator any more, not sure which come to think of it.

Back on the OP's initiative - if it sounds good, then good on you. In a world of marketing and shiny, expensive, cannons + stainless exhausts, it's a very good choice if it works.

Can having no rear muffler affect fuel econemy in anyway.?

when i had no rear muffler on mine, i lost a bit down low in the rev range but gained it up top. i didn't noticed any difference in fuel consumption with the box on or off
