Never been one for a sound system, but my cousin gave me some nice 6.5s for the front, got them in and working easily, and decided to take it further. Went and bought some 6x9s and a sony head unit. 6x9s were a piece of cake, but im not going to try tackle the head unit until i know whats going on. Ive done my research and found the console removal guide and mitsubishi wiring diagram. Now im just curious about the wiring harnesses.

It is my understanding i can cut the wires and solder+heatshrink them together, but im looking for something simpler.

Thinking of using aerpro wiring harnesses to get the job done. After a bit of reading i think what i need is these 2 parts:

http://www.aerpro.com.au/list.php?pcode=APP0111&cat_name=harnesses&cat_no=10&product_name=ISO+Connector+to+most+late+model+Mits ubishi&cat_sno=160
http://www.aerpro.com.au/list.php?pcode=APP8SP&cat_name=harnesses&cat_no=10&product_name=Sony+to+ISOHarness+12+Pin+Plug&cat_sno=161

Can anyone confirm this? Any explanation as to how it will work/what plugs into what?

Extra points for a pretty picture drawn in paint that shows me what the setup will look like :D

You've got it all sorted.

What happens is this:

Unplug original headunit power cable
plug in ISO Harness (you linked above)
plug in Sony Harness to ISO harness (you linked above, they can only go one way so you cant muck it up)
plug Sony harness end into new head unit.
DONE.

If you follow the console removal guide, all will be sweet. They arent hard except that top unit (with the air vents) can be an absolute biatch to get out, you just have to be firm but not jerky. You will see how the old unit is bolted in, and you can bolt in the new one to the same spots if you like. Re-assemble and you are done. If your new speakers are already working, then they will work by plugging these connector harnesses in.

I'm not sure if the model numbers are correct (don't have the receipt/boxes handy), but I did the exact same thing to my TJ - Magna to ISO plugs into the existing wiring harness, which then plugs into the ISO to Pioneer lead running to the headunit. Saves mucking around with soldering/crimping, and you can return to stock in a matter of minutes.

Like Josh said, pulling the console apart isn't hard. I don't think the top air vents are too bad - the hardest part for me is mucking around under the steering wheel to undo the leads running from the air vents. Watch where you dangle your ashtray etc though, there's some metal prongs on the end that don't look too sharp, but if you let them rub against your trim, it'll stratch it (I learnt that one the hard way :().
