View Full Version : KF Verada Revving/Reverse gear issue

Before anyone says anything, I've had a search and found a few other threads with this problem, however didn't 100% help in my situation.

My dads Verada battery died, so we got it changed however the power was off for too long so the ECU reset or something. Since the throttle body wasn't cleaned out, this stuffed something up and basically the car kept stalling when it was idle (which I hear is normal in this situation). We got RACQ to come have a look and the guy adjusted "something" temporarily so that we could drive to the mechanic.

We got the throttle body cleaned out and the base idle reset at Mitsu however whatever the RACQ guy did caused the car to rev to around 3k on first even when driving like a granny. Another issue is the car jolts when the reverse gear is selected. Also the car revs high on startup. We've had the car for around 10 years so it's very obvious when these issues occur all of a sudden.

I understand that other members have had these issues before, however they have happened out of nowhere and not due to an adjustment made by someone. Basically I just want to know if anyone could suggest what could have been adjusted, or if this is a coincidence and whether there is probably something else wrong. The car is probably due for a transmission flush, but it just seems a little odd that this starts happening after something was adjusted.

Note - I've already done the gear reset thing twice as well as the driving to 60km and then braking to a standstill thing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, cheers.

Take it back where you got it done and tell them to fix it .That would be the first thing i would do.

He probably adjusted the air bypass screw , if the idle has been set then you can just screw it back in until it drops to the proper value. It's on the top of the throttle body.

I should also mention that after about 2-3 mins though the revs drop to around 600-800. Could this still be the issue?

That sounds about right, it does take a little while before the ECU fully relearns again.

Had a similar issue on mine and it turned out to be an issue with the Idle Speed Control (ISC) servo.

Tried adjusting that screw, start up is good now, however the reverse gear jerk is still a problem. I might d/c the battery and relearn the gear engagement tomorrow to see if that fixes it.

Cheers for your help guys

did you do the part of the relearn where you go from neutral to drive , hold 3 secs, back to neutral, hold 3 secs etc 5 times, then do the same with reverse. oh and if your car is idling high cold, and you place it in gear it may jolt a little due to the high revs. also the idle air screw should be adjusted with car at operating temp.

yeah I gear engagement. Might just give a transmission flush a go and see what happens.

Make sure when you reconnect your battery that you let it idle for ten minutes with out touching anything (in 'n' or 'p').
This will allow the ecu to relearn the idle protocols for your engine.
There is a section in the mitsu workshop manual on this.
