View Full Version : Suspension noise

My TL. Bought it with super low springs and stiff shocks. Sold them and bought stock TL ES dampers from Mitsubishi and got some springs from a KW Verada.

The ride is really good, but here's the problem. Everytime I hit a bump or go over any sort of sharp undulation, the suspension makes sort of like a dull knocking/thumping sound. It's happened ever since I had the new suspension installed. I took it back at the time and the workshop told me it was normal. I've kinda got used to it now, but this is the only thing about the car that gives me the shits, otherwise, it's a really good car.

I was thinking a few things - Maybe the dampers are hitting on the bump stops (ie the bump stops could be flogged out) The dampers could be rooted (unlikely as they're brand new from Mitsubishi) or, the coils on the springs are hitting each other.

Those are my ideas. If anyone has anymore ideas or has had this problem, feel free to chime in.

Cheers,

Brett.

does the springs you got have the insulation tape around them, i believe the factory springs came with them.... could be coil clash...

I don't think they have tape around them. I will need to check this obviously as it's something I have suspected.

Possible but I doubt it over normal bumps. Easy way to check for bottoming out springs is to just jack the car up and see if the powdercoating has been eaten away.

The spring may not be seated properly in the damper either.
Not too sure if bump stops can cause it but I would make sure they are there. I had about 5mm of bumpstop left when I did my suspension. Not changing it stuffed that damper up

Mine seems to only be on the front too. It's possible I've received 2 completely rooted dampers brand new from Mitsubishi, but the chances are quite slim.

does it sound like my rear shock?

My magna use to make a thumping/tapping noise too, i fitted that coilspring "wrap" and the noise has gone away, also my falcon made the same noise but only after fitting the kings lowered springs. I put the coilspring wrap on those and the noise has also gone.

On the ford i found the top 2 coils of the king springs to be wound closer togther and when traveling over small bumps in the road those 2 coils were "clunking" together.

I havn't really heard your rear shock, Keith.

TBH, it doesn't sound like rooted dampers, it's more of a dull thunking type noise.

This has been my suspicion for a while now. Looks like I'm gonna have to buy some spring compressors and take the suspension out, wrap this tape around and see if that fixes it.

Edit: Just on this Jason, can you point me towards the product you used and perhaps where you purchased it from?

The stuff i used is a curled plastic wrap the same as MMAL fitted to the standard springs.

I bought a bag of it from pedders (part number PCP015) cost about $20 and theres enough in there to do a heap of cars.
