Hi I have a 2004 TL magna 4 speed auto that has done 140,000kms, I have noticed some times only on the first cold start for the day it makes a sound similar to a timing chain rattle for approx 1 minute, the sound is coming from the left side of the motor (looking at it from the front), it has had the timing belt chainged at 90,000km by a mitsubishi dealer and has been fully serviced, besides the noise it drives perfectly, does anyone have any idea what this is and if possible how difficult it is to fix. Regards

how long since the oils been changed? The noise is comminly known as 'noisy lifters' usually an indicator to change the oil. Thicker oil will also be fix this too. But the best fix is put new oil in and change a bit more regularly

do you know what oil viscosity is being used? The oil used in my service is 5w-30 and that perhaps is getting a tad thin for the motor @ 107000km. I get the lifter noise for about 30 secs if i haven't driven the car in a couple of days.

I'm pretty sure its not lifter noise as I am familiar with that sort of noise, it sounds to be coming from the timing belt area and sounds as if its resonating through the plastic belt cover. The oil has just been chainged and is chainged regularily with Castrol Magnetic 10W40

This is the notorious idler tensioner noise. Mine does the same thing. It's not going to affect the car at all. Try a search.
