I have recently acquired a 1995 Magna TS SE V6 from the deceased estate of my Grandfather.
The car has only 95k on the clock. It is almost showroom condition.
I have always been a Holden and Ford man for most of my adult life and up until recently was never interested in owning a Magna.
How wrong can one be. This motor car drives like new and is so quiet on the road that it puts some of my later model Fairlanes to shame.

Anyway I recently had the timing belt done and had the cooling system totally flushed and replaced with coolant.
I also had the power steering fluid topped up.
It was after I picked the car from the mechanic that I noticed a "water trickling" like sound coming from under the dash when the car would start up. It would go away but reappear when I would accelerate.
It sound like water or fluid trickling in pipes. It is not a loud sound.
My mechanic is away on leave and be back in two weeks so in the meantime I am eager to hear from others who have experienced similar.
As a Previous owner of Holden and fords this is the first time I have experienced such a noise.

Im guessing maybe the heater core may be leaking?

welcome to the forum!

if its the Heater core, they are notorious for breaking in both the 2nd and 3rd gens. Unfortunately it is a dash-out job to fix

its not the heater core its air in the cooling system. i have this also, nothing to really worry about..

I think they can get air in heater system. I'm not sure. It has been posted about before - have a search - the answer's here somewhere. I had it on my old car for years and never worried about it.

Thanks guys I will have a search on the forum.
I have done a google since and some suggestions are

1. Air in the power steering fluid.
2. Low on gas in the air conditioning.

I don't think it is a leaking heater core as I have inspected it and shows no signs.
This problem seems to dog a lot of Mitsi's.

How is the air con? Working or not?

It could just be air air con gas expanding in the system. Nothing to worry about if thats what it is but still best to check the other suggestions to make sure.

it does dog the mitsus unfort. it's not air in the power steer system as it is a self-bleeding system. Air in the system would also cause the p/s pump to make an odd noise i'm sure you've heard before.

also it's not the low gas in the air con because i sometimes have this sound and i had my AC regassed in december last year.

this is a dangerous suggestion, but it'll get the air out of the cooling system. get the car warm but not hot (1/4 of the guage) and get a rag. use the rag to stop burning your hand and unscrew the radiator cap. DO NOT REMOVE IT. it'll hiss as the air comes out.

people will advise against this and thats fine, it's an unorthodox way of doing it and i take no responsibility if it goes wrong...

Sounds like this may be the culprit as I noticed it after I got my coolant replaced. Just wondering why the air could not escape into to the reserve bottle? Think i'll wait till mechanic gets back and suggest it to him.
Interesting the trickling sound has not been heard today.

Yeah I had the same thing, got worse after a coolant change.. having done it again (to replace leaking water pump) it got better altho still a tiny bit.. as the water pump is mechanical and goes faster with RPM it makes sense (happens with acceleration for me)

So I also put it down to air in the coolant system through the heater core.. and i Have no leaks.

My old TS did this after I changed the water in it, I figured it was just an air bubble and it never caused any problems.

I just had the radiator replaced on my TS V6. My mechanic told me that when you do a "dry" refill there is a bolt on the front of the thermostat housing that you undo that will allow for air to escape out of the cooling system when you fill it. He told me you only do this on a dry refill, not when there is already fluid in the system.

the TR/TS thermostat housings are solid. no bolt.

dude
the piss easy way of getting air out of the cooling system is to turn your heater all the way to hot,
remove your radiator cap (before the car gets to normal operating temp)
let the car run until it reaches operating temp. you might lose some coolant out the top or into the overflow
if there was air, the level in the radiator should drop
recap the radiator and off you go

if ive mentioned something wrong, do correct me, we're big on unsafe practises at work

Spoke with mechanic and confirmed that tricle noise due to air in the coolant. He said it will eventually work its way out.

Must admit sound has quietened.
