hey guys, im looking for more power in my tj magna... thinking about cams first. i know that you can put the ralliart or 380 cams in from previous threads, but i want it to be a more aggressive/powerful? :woot:

not un-driveable though... :tired:

first, what would i need to upgrade if i was to put bigger cams in?

second, what sort of cams would be suitable?

third, how much am i looking at cost wise?

also, i know RPW do cams, in stages like stage 1 or 2 etc... what would the difference between these and a stock tj, ralliart or 380 be if anyone has them?

thanks in advance!

Check for posts from Alan J - he's reported on some significant engine mods to a 3.5L and 3.8L, from memory both are in an AWD.

been there tried that... read alot about 380 or ralliart cams, but the stuff bout aftermarket cams was either confusing or not helpful...

somthing equivalent to the RPW stage 1 or 2's with stiffer valve springs.
full exhaust system, extractors, highflow cat, minimum 2.5inch piping, hiflow muffler
tune to tidy up a/f ratios, and tune to 98ron fuel, so can advance the ignition timing.
manual conversion :)

yeah, got most of that all i need is the extractors... and im finding out which is gonna be more expensive the cams or extractors... i know the car will perform better with extractors first, but im getting both in the long run anyway! LOL

Have a chat to Ascal.
Not sure what aftermarket cams he had in but ended up loosing power. Went back to ralliart cams now.

I only lost power due to the nature of the AWD. (Plus the combo of SF/ Cams didn't work.)

The cams that I had in will be fine in a FWD, auto or manual, just something with a little less drivetrain loss. If I ever get around to it I might throw them in the TL.

To the OP, do the exhaust first, cams second.

first, what would i need to upgrade if i was to put bigger cams in? Nothing if you run Ralliart cams. The std springs are fine. As for other grinds... Im not 100% sure. But i know if the cam you change it to has less lift you wont need to alter the springs at all. Its when the cam has more lift and a longer duration that it needs to be better controlled to make sure the opening and closing of the valve is as precise as possible.

second, what sort of cams would be suitable? also, i know RPW do cams, in stages like stage 1 or 2 etc... what would the difference between these and a stock tj, ralliart or 380 be if anyone has them? For starters there are the Ralliarts or 380 cams which are a good upgrade. You keep your idle quality and it gives more punch everywhere in the rev range (remember that this works so much better with an ECU flash upgrade too). There are some Tighe cams about as well... But i would seriously check the lift on these as i have experienced 2 sets and 1 had less lift (inlet) than a std "6" cam but more lift on the exhaust side than a Ralliart... But they have had more duration so as to try and compensate for the less lift. And that was on the stage "2"s!

third, how much am i looking at cost wise?
A good set of 2nd hand 380 or Ralliart cams can be as much as $300 ish. The Tighes or RPW ones... Who knows? Maybe just keep an eye out and about.
