I've got a Series II KW Verada wagon which I've owned for 12 months. It has only done around 65,000kms. The fuel consumption has been pretty bad since I bought it. It gets 17-18L/100kms around town and 11-12L/100kms on the highway. I've replaced the air filter (K&N), installed new spark plugs and replaced the 02 sensor and there has been no change. A few times a week we do really short trips (around 2 kays) dropping/picking the kids up from school. Would this cause poor economy or should it be better than this?

if that's the only driving this car gets, then I wouldn't expect fuel economy to be very good. what's the average km/h on the trip computer?

I doubt 2 km would be enough to get the car up to operating temp.

cheers,

yep, it'll be running as rich as a pig doing that.

We do other driving as well. Most of the driving is for longer distances than this. I have previously driven it to work several times a week (around 20 kms each way) and still ended up with similar economy. Average speed on the latest tank is 28 km/h over 280 kms with 17.4 kms/100kms economy.

get some exhaust work done, extractors, cat and rear muffler, join the qmd guys when they get steve knight up to reflash their ecu. Only down side is you have to run 98ron if you have the 98ron flash but you can opt for the 95ron flash, but you won't see much performance gain compared to the 98ron flash. But fuel economy will be improved as well. Thats another suggestion anyway.

Sprinter. How are you calculating the economy? Are you going off the trip computer or are you doing it the old fashioned way? Trip computers can be inaccurate at times and i find that i will always get a discrepancy between the trip computer and doing it mathematically.

That said, driving for economy i would be doing these things.

Try to avoid short trips with a cold engine. You mention you do this and as the engine is on an enrichment cycle to assist in warming up your econ will go out the window as it never has a chance to get to operating temp.

Run higher tyre pressures. From memory Magnas are about 32, try 36 psi. The ride will be firmer but that is the trade off.

Never drive over 1/4 throttle. Let the auto upshift early.

Make sure the servicing is spot on. As has been mentioned previously the air and fuel filter, plugs (NGK's are the best), leads and good quality oil.

Running with the a/c on will use more fuel. And i think it sapped like 8kw on a dyno run i did a while back...

Hopefully some of this has been of assistance!

Irvin. He asked for more economy. Not more power... I noticed my consumption is hardly any different since the flash anyway.

my TW wagon, auto, stock, can get 7.9 on the highway, sitting on 100 kph, and gets 12.5 in town. Driven fairly gently but not making a huge effort in that dept.

i'm getting fan-bloody-god-damm-tastic economy out of the TL. Hence my suggestion. Bit of a win-win from my experience. This tank was 10.5l/100km with combined freeway and traffic and 1 freaking hour of start-stop congestion on the westgate fwy last night with their major road works they have going 5 lanes of inbound traffic into 2 lanes.

Your suggestion is fair... As you seem to be getting better consumption. But. If he has issues paying for 91 at his present rate of consumption how do you think he will go paying for at least 95 after he has added an exhaust (1k) and a flash ($500). $1500 buys a hell of a lot of fuel! And amortised over the cost of getting the work done will take him shit loads of kms to pay back.

Better off doing the cheap stuff first.

Well whatever it is it'll hard to e-diagnose. Take it to a mechanic and get them to do a check over. Could be so many things.

I'm going mainly off the trip computer, however I've calculated it manually a few times and it's always been almost identical. I always run high type pressures and the car is always regularly serviced. Rarely do I put my foot down.

Don't really want to mod the car. I've gone down that path with other cars and want to keep this one standard as it's the family run about. The next step is to take it to a mechanic to see if there's is a problem, however I thought someone here may have some suggestions. I've run the engine diagnostic myself and it didn't return any errors. How hard is it to check whether the coolant temperature sensor is working properly?

Dont know how others do it. But take the sensor out and dip it in hot water connected to an ohmmeter. (with a thermostat in the water too)
as the sensor gets hotter the resistance will change. compare the ohm reading you get to that of factory specs in the service manual.

or, spend $8 and get a new one and save the hassle! lol

Where do you get a new one for $8? I rang Mitsubishi today and they want $150.

I reckon it is normal. the 2km drive kills the consumption. I also realise that the co-branded petrol (Woolies and Coles), and the Ethanol Blend kills consumption.

I often rely on the trip computer as it is always accurate to +/- 0.2L.

The next time you are on the Highway, reset the trip computer and read off the average after 2 minutes of a particular constant speed (not more than 110kmh). You should not see more than 8.5L/100km average consumption. If it is more, then perhaps you have something faulty.

i have the same prob i use 11.1l/100kms i it use to be around 7 do you run ruff on idle? like it missing a beat i think my problem is "ignition system" im going to replace the spark plugs front and back with "bosh Platinum IR Fusion" Spark Plug and the rotor in the dizzy cap and clean the dizzy cap and replace the "spark plugs leads going with after market ones" i think the rotor is the main problem look's like it not sparking at the tip of the rotor witch i think it is puting the timing out

running 2003 tj magna sports 58000k
i have cleand mass air sensor /o2 sensor clean k&n air filter and i all so have full after market exhaust system

let me know if u fix it and what the problem was

hope this helps

Maybe u need to change gears and not stay in 2nd at 100km/hr? ..lol

Seriously though, my TJ gets about 7-8l/100 on highway at 110km/h and around 9 combined but it does get to around 12 when just in traffic around town. I use min Premium 95 ron.

I would have it checked out by a mechanic.

My XR6 Turbo was about 18l/100 when i flogged it around town so Im guessing that there is something that is causing your poor fuel consumption.
