hi all, not trying to start a 3rd gen / 380 war here. A serious question. Are the stock 380's noticeably quicker then say a quick TJ or ralliart? Just thinking ahead to when I eventually upgrade. My TF has 141 kilowatts at the wheels and feels pretty punchy. Dyno differences aside, some 380's on the dyno seem to have not much more then that. Does the extra weight of the 380's slow them down a bit? or does the touch extra torque help out? Has someone owned a 3rd gen and upgraded? After genuine thoughts here. Has anyone done a quarter mile run?
Cheers.

Well you'll probably succeed anyway.
A serious question. Are the stock 380's noticeably quicker then say a quick TJ or ralliart?
No. Stock 380 will do somewhere around 15.3-15.5 depending on manual or auto and model.

Your TF has extractors i'm betting
EDIT: in fact checking your profile you've done everything except S/C. .
Most 380 auto with airbox changes and a different muffler will get that without extractors.
With extractors add 17-20KW ATW.
Does the extra weight of the 380's slow them down a bit?
Yes, particularly off the mark. At higher speeds they are good.
Has anyone done a quarter mile run?
Yes, and I didn't do very well but I think that might be my inexperience and lack of technique. The 380 is hard to get going without masses of wheelspin.

I've driven plenty of both .
The 380 handles better, no question of it.
It has 300cc more engine capacity.
It seems a damn lot quicker than the Veradi Xi I used to have, but that could be the handling.
I wouldn't go back to a Magna...no way, not now.

Type49 had a 380VRX and that was slower down the 1/4 then his TL. not sure what his TF did down the 1/4 but i think it wasnt far off that too.

Type49??? :wtf:
The 380 manual did a 15.4 with 90mm Galant intake and straight through muffler.
TF 3.0 manual did a 15.08 with a Redback system and custom engine pipe.
TL 3.5 manual 15.01 but has G-tec'd at 14.8 with more mods...

So, if after outright performance, go 3rd gen, best overall package 380. Correct?

Correct
I would argue that point... Been there done that. They both have their good and bad points. Its just a personal preference thing at the end of the day.

The 3rd gen has reached close to the end of its development.
The 380 has only just got started.
With light mods you're already well ahead of 3rd Gens in power development for equivalent changes. Only one 380 is seriously S/C (with extractors, chip, methanol, etc) and that is conservative boost @ 5PSI.
The 380 is definitely superior as a chassis and in handling. Braking it has an edge (stock) as well.
Cams are another dimension and noone has done them yet. So far, small mods have released good HP, much more than the 6G74.
I'm leaving the Ralliart out of the comparison.

I'm with Knotched here. From what we've seen so far, the 6G75 is a superior engine and the 380 chassis is also superior.

A Supercharged 380 with LPG has tremendous potential as well.

only thing with owning a 380 is you have to deal with the fact that everything after the front gaurds is butt ugly.

That's a bit harsh....my chick wouldn't like you saying that about her butt...:)
With the right wheels, leather seats, a good stereo, sunroof and good looking chick next to you it's not that bad a looker really....throw in a nice spoiler....and maybe a blower.....Hmmmmm...
It's all about the drive...and they drive bloody nice....and they are so cheap for what you get.
I can't get my missus out of it...she keeps stealing it to go shopping.

Yea, they look butt ugly in es form...like any base mode car. IMO the VRX and GT look hot!

The 380 is quieter and more refined. I had an SX having upgraded from a 3rd gen and the difference between them in terms of the driving experience was significant. Now back in a 3rd gen TL after wrecking my 380 it 'feels' like an inferior car across a range of dimensions. I'd go back to the 380 in an instant but for the fact they are no longer affordable for me!

Very nice. No, no GTLs here I don't think. How long ago did you buy that? Either must be an old photo, or the car has been in storage until you bought it. Any mod plans?
Why not put these pics (or newer different ones) in the Post Your Ride thread.

Bought it in May 2008, kept it for a month then the old man offered to buy it, I found it too..."middle aged".
(anyways it's inheritance at a profit...LOL)

I was looking at both a series 3 AWD Verada but went for the 380 instead as it presented better value for money IMO. Both are good cars but I just felt that the Magna was looking a bit tired and dated compared to the 380. I am not trying to flame anyone, just what I thought when I was looking earlier this year.
