Guys

Bought a 99 Triton during the week (check out 'Members Machines' for pics). I noticed the intake sucks in from behind the headlight and does a big 180 before entering the airbox. Can anyone here see a problem with me eliminating the bend and running it straight out of the airbox to a gap behind the grill??? I know the opening will then sit next to the radiator and a little lower however the intake runs right next to it now anyway. Any advice on how I should go about it would be appreciated.

No problem at all. They would have done that for noise reduction most likely.

Thanks for the prompt reply. I wanted to keep the standard intake intact so any suggestions how I should go about making a new intake?

most 4x4's have their air intake setup to minimise the chance of getting water into the engine, when going off road.
i dont think you would see any improvement changing this, best to buy a snorkle and go upgraded exhaust system

Maybe just modify the piping there to take the kink out of it. Just run it straight into the hole in the airbox that's already there.

OR, just had an idea if you don't mind the noise. Take the whole standard airbox off and put a POD on the end of the MAF. It should sit in behind the headlight or thereabouts.

I wouldn't go the pod filter route if you use the vehicle off road, else it isn't a bad idea.

I should have mentioned it isnt a 4 wheel drive and I dont intend driving thru any rivers so lowering the opening 10 centimeters shouldnt hurt it too much. I realise removing the bend wont give me an extra 10kw but I just wanted to expermient with it to see it will do....thats why I wanted to keep the standard intake in case I have to replace it.

I'm not that keen to go the pod option but was wondering if there is some sought of flex piping I can buy to create a new intake??? If so, anyone know where I can get it from??

Maybe just grab some PVC pipe or some of that hard, bendy plastic pipe you can get from Bunnings.

Took your advice Disciple....got all the materials from Bunnings for about $12. Just ran the piping straight down to a big hole that was next to the radiator. If I look thru the grill, I can see a direct path straight up into the airbox. I also plugged up the hole in the airbox that leads into the adjacent resonator. Feels more responsive to drive but there is every chance thats all in my mind!!!

Nice job Blue

my corolla had a stupid intake setup with bends like you see there

I removed the light and plumbed the flexipipe (came standard on the rolla) to behind the foglight

heaps more improvement and looks STOCK just like yours

When I removed the original intake I realised the 180 degree bend actually reduced down to less than 50mm so it was quite a restriction. The more I drive it, the happier I am with the result. As you found out with your Corolla, its a pretty easy & cheap mod that still looks relatively stock.

My new motor goes in next week so that should hopefully improve things a bit more.
