So, im in the market for some new tyres for my newly acquired TJS2 VRX 17" rims.

Not looking at spending more then $150 a tyre. So, anyone know a good set of tyres on a low budget?

Also, what do all the markings on the tyre mean ie; 245/45 r17???

Im guessing the r17 is rim size, 245 = Tyre width?, 45 = Tyre height?

And in according to these numbers, what best suits the vrx rims for daily driving?

Im all new to buying tyres, so im after all the info!!!

Cheers,

Wiggles

the 45 in 245/45Rxx is the percentage of the sidewall height in relation to the width of the tyre.

so if you got a 200/50/Rxx that means the sidewall is 1/2 the size of the tread.

245/45 R17 means:
245mm tread width
sidewall height = 45% of tread width = .45*245 = 110.25mm
R17 = fit 17" wheels.

Anyhow, 245 is way too wide for TJiI VRX 17x7 wheels. It is illegal. Best tyre size for it is 225/50R17. Maxxis z4s is pretty good in that size.

;1146441']the 45 in 245/45Rxx is the percentage of the sidewall height in relation to the width of the tyre.

so if you got a 200/50/Rxx that means the sidewall is 1/4 the size of the tread.
You mean half :D

Ahhhh awesome. Thanks guys.

Guy from Bob Jane told me to look at some 235/45 R17 maxxis tread as the mid range.

Any good?

Yeaha im not looking for the best. Just to keep me going.

R4zor told me to get Nankans or what ever they are.... But for $80 a tyre i didnt really trust it.

Anyone had any experience with these? He said they where really good but lasted about 6 months

My closest tyre place (Tyre King I thnk they are called) said in 17's they recommend Falkens @ the $150 for the budget option, and the others who's brand I don't remember were about $220.

I've heard good reviews on Falkens generally speaking, but can't say what 'variety' these were.

I'd probably go the MA-Z4S Victra from the Maxxis range in a 225/50R17 for your budget, should be a shade under $150 each and are decent performers, probably about as good as it'll get for the $.

Sure Dan, i wasnt inteding on buying them that soon anyways!!! Sounds like a plan though.

So cute today, its my 21st and my girlfriend bought me some heavy duty car soap, a sponge, heavy duty wax and a polishing clothe. For someone who refuses to buy me anything for my car i was very surprised

245/45 R17 means:

245 does not mean tread width. 245 means the nominal tyre width when fitted to the rim width nominated by the tyre maker in the specifications. In truth it doesn't mean much at all as the tyre can be measured on any allowable rim width. For a 235 thats typically 7.5-9.5" so a 235 that is nominally 235mm wide on a 7.5" rim will be 245mm wide on a 8.5" rim. Or a tyre that measured 235 on a 9" rim will be only about 223mm on a 7.5" rim.

That is one reason why actual tyre size doesn't actually relate to the size thats moulded into the wall. The other reason is that when tyres were laid up manually tolerances had to be quite loose or many perfectly good tyres would not have passed legal size requirements. So governments had to make the size laws pretty loose. Now with robots laying up tyres the sizing is much tighter but tyres makers make use of the old loose regulations to play the numbers game.

The only measurement that is fairly tightly controlled is tyre diameter and even that can vary by around 7mm.

Tread width is typically about 0.75-0.78 of nominal tyre width for general tyres and 0.85-0.9 for high performance tyres.

Cheers,
Alan

That is an interesting read, especially when put into the context of being pulled up by the authorities on tyre legalities on road cars. If a copper pulled you up about the rolling diameter being a gnats crack over the allowed legal limit, you could argue that the rolling diameter of the particular tyre actually falls within the legal requirements.

I didn't realise there were such differences in the printed size displayed on the tyrewall. I doubt it would stand up in court though.

Little bit over your budget but I just fitted Bridgestone Turanza ER300's to the rear same size 225/50R17 i paid $200 per tyre in Bendigo so in Melb should be a lot cheaper. So far they are ok, fairly quiet too.

245's would be bulging too much on the 17" VR-X wheels, 235's would be as wide as you'd wanna go anyway.

I was mistaken in quoting up those tyres, just went off the example given by Wiggles.

Further investigation revealed 225/50/R17 being standard fitment, so I'll requote for those on wednesday.
