the piece of metal found in the cat could be a piece of "divider" used to "direct" exhaust gas from the front and rear banks of the engine pipe as they meet. Common thing to break of as its just spot welded in like 4 places. You know you have broken it off when you get a buzz/rattle in your cat when you drive around.

Could the metal of done the damage to the cat?

I have the same problem with the b uzz/rattle once the exhaust heats up, and only happens under acceleration.
Having the car up on the hoist and having someone rev the engine, all the buzzing sounds appeared to be coming from the middle to rear. So after replacing both the middle and rear sections the buzz/rattle is still there, so the cat is the only thing left to replace. It shows how accosutics can give a false idea of where the problem is.
