My air con belt screeches at high revs and sometimes chirps when the air con compressor kicks in. Only started after mitsi put a new belt on. Had it back to Mitsi and while it has improved, it's still a problem. Anyone know a long term solution to this issue? It's driving me bananas. :tantrum:

I think this is common in magna's
I'm guessing you thrash it cold/with the aircon on too?

The tension must be wrong, again this is why i do my own repairs!! bet they charged a pretty penny to incorrectly tension the belt.

Your belt/s is too loose. I can't believe Mitsubishi did not fix it.
Does the car also make a little groan noise when cold in gear and accelerating gently? Usually also comes with a loose belt.

just put some more tension on the belt... there should be no more than about 5-8mm deflection when pushing on it.

6mm - 7.2mm for new belt, 8mm-9.3mm used belt applying 44.5 Nm of force midway along belt from bottom. i know its hard to estimate the force but i found when mine was correct, i could just twist the belt 90 degrees, no more.

Take it back to the dealer and get them to fix their own ****up. What's the point in paying someone to do a job when you have to finish it yourself?

Sorry guys, been offline and forgot about this thread. Anyone got some diy instructions to retension the belt or is it best left to the pros??

Me too, except mine makes a groaning noise at all temperatures when accelerating from idle revs. I'll check the belt tensions in the morning.
Cheers for the tip :)

Yep that groan at idle and slightly above is belt tension.
Sometimes your belts will stretch that much that you can't tension them enough and you will need new belts.
Try and tighten first.

Tightened the belts this morning, still have some adjustment left.
The groaning sound has gone away :). Thanks again for the tip

I'm not home at the moment but the proceedure is in the PDF workshop manual.
It's easy enough, if you can weild a spanner you can do it ;)
You'll need to jack the RHS front up so you can get underneath, a 14mm socket, ratchet & extension and a 14mm spanner.
remember to use axle stands if getting under the car!! This belt problem is happening to me so might try and resolve this next weekend. I also have groan under light acceleration and idle when cold

mine tends to screech after backing off from full throttle when the A/C cuts back in after being cut out on full throttle
