So I'm looking in the boot to see how to remove 6x9's out of the rear deck, and I see this hole, which would be the right diameter for an open air sub. Is that what it's intended for? If not, could someone clue me in?

I'm thinking it's a direct mount. It looks to be just the right size to mount a 10", even the screw holes seem to be in the right place. I'd be damned at the idea of mounting a sub directly to the metal deck with only 4 screws at that, but I'd consider it possibly. I'm not looking to doofdoof the neighborhood, just to give the cabin a bit of ass candy when desired.

i would say you could mount a sub there, then you would have to cut the parcel shelf to see it anyway. I have 2 x10s in a box, you notice the difference with the cover gone. Also if you want more bass there is a huge metal plate behind the back seat remove that there is about 10 x 12mm bolts that hold it in remove bolts and kick it out.

If you can mount a sub in there I would be happy to hook you up with one. I would love to get feedback from the results as well.

That hole is for a free air sub
Came out in some models, but all have the cutout spot
Tho I dont remember mine looking like that, thought they were flat
My verada had that too...was a TE/F KE/F thing from memory. Needs to be a pretty specific type sub though, shallow mount 10" free air with little excursion....never gonna blast your pants off, would only be useful for a bit of extra depth to your music.

Yep the early build 3rd gens had a screwed on metal coverplate over the hole on the rear shelf.
Later models didnt have the "stamped" out hole, so did not need the coverplate. The "sub" hole was never used for anything here in Aust, so MMAL later on changed the stamping die so that the hole wasnt punched out and instead was just left as a raised flat piece on the shelf.

Free-air subs are a very good idea for that little bit of extra low end.
You won't get earth-shattering bass, nor that amazingly tight punchy pass, but they will pick up the lower range frequencies that your mid-range speakers are not designed to handle, allowing you to maintain clarity and a nice full spectrum of the audio frequency range.
Many new cars that come with factory subwoofers use free air subs and sound half decent.
Here is a little write up I found - interesting read for anyone contemplating trying this.

isn't that a brace/support so that if the car is in a side impact crash it would help to stop the car from squashing together as easily? am i right or can someone correct me
