Before anybody says "don't bother" or "manual conversion" - You pay for a manual conversion, and I'll gladly do it, for now - It's going tippy!

Now, this mod is 100% electrical and no mechanical changes are needed (ie. Gearbox). The problem I am having in this instance is that the shifter loom connects to the engine harness, and finding an engine harness with 4sp tippy is proving hard. What I am thinking of doing is modding the wiring a little bit to do a direct wiring connection from the shifter to the ECU - I have the pinouts as per service manual and am willing to wire this up. My question is - How?

The following is the wiring diagram from the tippy shifter to the ECU

http://img203.imageshack.us/img203/3176/61723501.jpg

As you can see the harness B-100 (Shifter Assembly) needs to be connected to the ECU (B-111A), this is normally done via the engine harness which I can not get a hold of so what I am proposing to do is get a B-100 plug from a tippy assy and connect pins 1,3,5 to the existing wiring, and divert 7,8,4 directly to the ECU with my new harness. Is it possible to add these wires to B-111A without replacing the plug with one from a tippy engine harness, can I just add these wires directly into the existing plug, if so how?

Note: I know that I need another ECU/BEM, I have them sitting here! :)

If anybody else has any suggestions, or knows where I can find a 4sp tippy engine harness, let me know!

Thanks,
Dean

Ok, holy crap... I just found something that is AWESOME!

Now, this is the diagram for a standard auto, if you take a look at the pinouts for L/2/3, they match the pins that are being used for the tippy functions, the wires are already there! I just need to solder on a new plug!

Nice find!!!

Make sure you take plenty of pics when you go ahead with it and write up a DIY.

Will the end result give you a choice between tippy and non tippy or will you just be stuck in pseudo-manual mode all the time?

The end result will be a factory tippy. If I have this right, with an unlocked ECU it can be done by simply replacing the shifter and ECU (Adapter harness should be possible to convert from auto to tippy plugs) - No dash out, no harness replacement.

TBH, I see the tippy to be a poor man's manual
If it's as easy as you say it is then yeah go for it
Dont know if the dash lights will still work when your in tippy mod? unless you replace the cluster from a tippy model

I have a full TH Sports dash harness, I will be looking for a tippy cluster (TF/TH Sports) but for now it will just use the P/N/R/D lights as per normal, with the 3/2/L lights going spasic in tippy mode :P

Poor man's manual hey? Autos cost more from factory remember!

Adds a bit more fun to the slushbox auto, if you can do this 'conversion' cheap enough it might just be worth it to spruce up the drives to work.

Definately, I may have obtained the wiring plugs I need to make a conversion harness - I will keep you all updated. I'm just waiting on locks/key as Christian forgot them! and I'm not sure this ECU is gonna work without its matching BEM! :P

Everybody loves research, so heres mine! I know exactly how to wire it now after hours studying the diagrams :)

Inhibitor Switch

From my research, the tiptronic inhibitor switch was the normal auto one, only the "gear" pins were removed as this is now all controlled by the TCU and shifter. There is no mechanical shift mode for 1/2/3.

// Auto Configuration
A-89 PIN 1 Drive
A-89 PIN 2 Second
A-89 PIN 3 Park
A-89 PIN 4 Neutral
A-89 PIN 5 Third
A-89 PIN 6 Low
A-89 PIN 7 Reverse
A-89 PIN 8 Multi-purpose Fuse 5 (Engine Bay)
A-89 PIN 9 Input Neutral/Park Bridge for Ignition System
A-89 PIN 10 Output Neutral/Park Bridge for Ignition System

// Tippy Configuration
A-89 PIN 1 Drive
A-89 PIN 3 Park
A-89 PIN 4 Neutral
A-89 PIN 7 Reverse
A-89 PIN 8 Multi-purpose Fuse 5 (Engine Bay)
A-89 PIN 9 Input Neutral/Park Bridge for Ignition System
A-89 PIN 10 Output Neutral/Park Bridge for Ignition System

-------------------------------------------------------

ECU Connector Configuration

These wires run from the inhibitor switch, and in the case of tiptronic, tiptronic shifter to the ECU/TCU. These are their positions in the ECU connector B-111.

// Auto configuration
B-111 PIN 101 Park
B-111 PIN 102 Drive
B-111 PIN 108 Reverse
B-111 PIN 109 Third
B-111 PIN 110 First
B-111 PIN 121 Neutral
B-111 PIN 122 Second

// Tippy Configuration
B-111 PIN 101 Park
B-111 PIN 102 Drive
B-111 PIN 105 First
B-111 PIN 108 Reverse
B-111 PIN 109 Sports Mode
B-111 PIN 110 Downshift
B-111 PIN 117 Third
B-111 PIN 118 Second
B-111 PIN 121 Neutral
B-111 PIN 122 Upshift
B-111 PIN 128 Forth

-------------------------------------------------------

Shifter Assy

The standard auto shifter does not have a harness (except for the external lighting circuit which is also present in the tiptronic, it is seperate from the main harness), it is all cable-driven and handled by the inhibitor switch. Tiptronic will require these pins to be found and the wires installed. To do this without replacing the engine harness, a new harness will have to be fabricated.

B-100 PIN 1 Inhibitor Switch (Goes to to ECU B-111 PIN 102)
B-100 PIN 3 Multi-purpose Fuse No. 5 Engine Bay (New feed, other feed used by inhibitor switch only on auto models)
B-100 PIN 4 Sports Mode (Goes to ECU B-111 PIN 109)
B-100 PIN 5 Standard Mode (Goes to the Cluster C-03 PIN 44)
B-100 PIN 7 Upshift (Goes to the ECU B-111 PIN 122)
B-100 PIN 8 Downshift (Goes to the ECU B-111 PIN 110)

-------------------------------------------------------

Cluster

The cluster pinout indicates that 3/2/1 will light-up according to the current tippy shift, however "D" will not light up for forth while in tippy as it will be looking for Pin 43 and not 44.

// Tippy Cluster Configuration
C-03 PIN 47 Park
C-03 PIN 50 Reverse
C-03 PIN 46 Neutral
C-03 PIN 44 Drive
C-03 PIN 43 Forth
C-03 PIN 42 Third
C-03 PIN 41 Second
C-03 PIN 49 Low

// Auto Cluster Configuration
C-03 PIN 47 Park
C-03 PIN 50 Reverse
C-03 PIN 46 Neutral
C-03 PIN 44 Drive
C-03 PIN 42 Third
C-03 PIN 41 Second
C-03 PIN 49 Low

-------------------------------------------------------

If anybody has anything to add, feel free. These diagrams can be found on pages 24-31 of the workshop manual under the section TH/KH -> Chassis Electrical -> Circuit Diagrams -> Elec 4 Speed Automatic Transmission

Didn't someone try all this about 2 or 3 years ago? I'd be searching, I dont think it was this easy IIRC.

Wasn't that to convert to 5speed tippy? I could be wrong. :happy:

The problem was they were attempting to add tipsy functions without changing the ecu or shifter and just add buttons. This was because the shifter assy cost over $1000 this method i an using the ecu and shifter out of a th sports and changing dash harness as well. The mod's i an doing to the engine harness are to simply connect the shifter to the ecu and inhibitor switch. I did a lot of research on the original thread you mentioned before studying the workshop manual to see how everything works
