View Full Version : Questions about Parabolics

Hi y'all. I can't help feeling that this is a noob question since it seems everyone except me already has parabolics, but here goes.
First of all I was wondering where is the best place to get them from?? Either thru mail order or somewhere that has outlets in SE QLD. I get the impression you must be able to get them thru mitsubishi cause the Verada's come out with them (i think) - but is this an economical way to get a pair, being that genuine parts @ retail are always expensive?? Basicly I just want to know where the best place to get them from and what sort of pricing (ballpark) am I looking at?
Another thing I'd like to know is how interchangeable are headlights from different models? I've got a TJ - so will I have to get KJ headlights or are all 3rd Gen's (except the TL duh) compatible in the headlight department.
And last but not least.... how easy are they to fit? Give me a socket set and bolts anyday.... but anything in a car with wires attached is strange and unusual to me.
Ta in advance.
Genuine mitsu parabolics for a TJ series magna (from a sports / vr-x) will set you back close to $650 per side if you buy them new from a mitsu dealer.
A guy by the name of "bogus" on these forums is usually able to get them cheaper (PM him or check the for sale section of these forums), I got mine from him. Price is usually around the $550 mark (plus shipping) for a second hand pair from memory.
As for fitting give yourself plenty of time to change everything over. Wiring is easy in comparison to physically fitting them and getting them into the same hole as your old standard headlights came out of.

$650 per side?? or per pair? I know genuwine is expensive - but surely not $1300!

You weren't kidding - this post has everything. I'm curious about a couple of things tho - so do only 1 piece paras fit the TJ exec? or do 2 piece fit? do they both require some manipulation to get them in?? which is easier? anyone with 2 piece on their TJ's? details?
Did you end up getting yours off bogus or mitusbishi?
and on a completely unrelated topic.... I like the look of your body kit (well the front skirt at least) who makes it and where did you get it from (if you don't mind sharing the secret)?

Wouldn't surprise me if they are $650 each, given the foglamps on a verada are $400 each.
The two piece fits the TJ (see WaTCHME's car), but you would have to get corner indicators as well (if your existing lamps are 1 piece)
New ones are $650 for the right one, & $650 for the left one. (I have the part numbers if you want to check with your dealer).
The two or one piece varieties will fit, in fact the two piece would possibly be slightly easier to fit however in my opinnion don't look as good.
I got mine off of bogus, I wasn't paying $1300 for a new set. :D
It's the Mitsubishi Sports Wagon kit. You should be able to get it through most Mitsu dealers. Only thing with mine is that the skirts for the rear have been modified to fit a sedan instead of a wagon. Oh and the rear wing that I have is the VR-X wing.
I also got mine from bogus, from memory the 2 piece are around $450 and 1 piece $550 both are Plus Post quite a few have got them from him so there's no problem with him despite his name.

I bought a pair of one-piece paras from bogus and installed them myself. (which is something since I don't know much about mechanics). You may need electronics skills to do a clean job, to rig up that little connector akko talks about in that post, which i used too. You will only need a two-connector one tho.
A brief rundown:
* YOU WILL NEED - Socket set, screw driver set, rug to place the new and old lights on. Torch (in case you do it after work in winter and it gets dark before you finish - like me), Rags, Patience
1. partially remove washer bottle (remove the plug underneath) and remove the battery cover to access the back of the lights.
2. Talk the front grill off. (there are a couple of clips but no screws)
3. There are three bolts holding the main portion of the headlight in. remove these. (one behind grill, two on top)
4. Remove the headlight partially and then pull the plugs out of the back (squeeze the sides then pull the plugs back)
5. remove the headlight
6. Pull the indicator forward and unclip the spring at the back of it.
7. Turn the globe holder bit and remove. (let the globe dangle there because you can put that in the parabolic one.
8. Remove the brass support for the indicator from the chassis by unscewing the bolt from UNDERNEATH. (it is difficult to get to but not too hard)
9. Remove a similar one from the parabolics to go in (if it even has it)
10. Put the indicator globe in the parabolic and make sure the other plugs are lined up correctly (if you get the parabolics in position but have a plug squashed to the side the paras will have to come out again)
11. Slide the whole assembly in indicator first and wiggle and jiggle to get them in. It will require patience and a tiny bit of squeezing but trust me, they will go in without removing panels or bumpers or anything else. It is a good idea to fix a rag to the top portion of the bumper because the bottom of the lights could rub there while fitting.
12. PLug em up! (unfortunately I cant remember the wiring off the top of my head but if you are going ahead, or if ppl are curious I will go have a look in mine to find out)
I didnt really intend to do a almost-tech article but I got carried away :)
I had to loosen my guards, front bumper and remove my vr-x style wheel arc flares to make life easier to fit them on my TJ.
Not sure if the same measures are necessary on the 2nd gens though...
All up it took me and the ol' man about 3.5 hours to physically fit both headlights, then after a few trips back and forth to supercheap over the following fews days and some assistance from some mates with better auto-electrical knowledge and soldering skills than myself I got everything rigged up and working sweet!

Wow thanks heaps Candarin and Akko for all the info. I wish I could go out and do it tomorrow - unfortunately I need to give my credit card a break for a few weeks.
bummer.
