Just a quick check with you guys. Which Verada models had the half height electric antenna function like the one available in the KH Xi? I'm looking for one which can fit my KJ2.
Any help is appreciated!

I know the KS xi had that option, so maybe the same one will work.
I tried without any luck to find a suitable aftermarket one, although I have a suspicion that a certain calais aftermarket one has that function.
Took me aaaaaaages to find a working one, and when I did, it was like $45 delivered off ebay.
Good luck finding one, if you do, I would be interested in pics to see if it is the same as the KS one

For memory it was just the KE's/KF's a KH's in 3rd gens.
I'm sure its not changable as the KJ's have a differnt type of wireing setup than the earlier ones. KJ's only run a 2 wire where as the earlier ke's etc run a 4 wire sysytem i think. Ask Mal to clarify.

I think some KJ's have the same power-antenna that does half-height - just HU does not support that in KJ.
Put it this way - I have a 2000 Verada ei where the antenna motor is 4 or 5 wire, and is a comparatively bulky unit. My TJ (II) Sports has the much smaller antenna motor and only 2 or 3 wire connection.

My KH Ei had the half-height, was a button on the stock HU, only ever used the radio at half-height since full height made no difference (at least in my area/car).

Other than the KH Ei... any other Veradas had it? I can install a switch to control the height, that's not a problem.

i put a switch in my old patrol so i could fully control the height of the antenna

Ok summary thus far... KH Ei and Xi has the function. Any other Veradas had it that I can put onto my KJ2?

All Verada's had it, as did many Magna's like the Altera, Altera LS, Advance had the wiring but not the aerial, some have both the plugs down back but not the correct arial as well (THII VRX is one that comes to mind)
My TE now has the wiring from a host of cars but the side harness was from a TJII and has the right plug
There are 2 plugs
8 pin for the half height
3 pin for the standard elec

so if you have an 8 pin plug, all you need is a switch ti make it half height?

Yep.
I installed a 3 position 'on/off/on' switch into my car to make the half height work without the factory HU. All the HU button does is transfer power from one wire to another. Onkytonk has done this mod as well.
So 8 pin plug + Antenna motor to suit = half height.
Also apparently in the newer 3 pin antennas, the mast is not replaceable I'm told (though I'm sure I'll be corrected). The earlier versions are able to have replacement masts installed.

My KJ2 didn't have it... bloody buggers must have cut cost and just used a standard antenna! Not too sure whether the KL or KW had it though.
Oh wait... it might have had it in the beginning but due to an accident in that spot, it might have been replaced with a standard one.

It may have changed somewhere in the KJ era - my KJ (I) ei has the eight-pin motor, which has replaceable antenna mast.
Like Mike said (above), the 3-pin motor as fitted in my TJ (II) Sports.... well, I was under the impression that the mast in it is not replaceable. However, I am sure others have stated in here that the 3-pin motor can have the mast replaced (since I got a new motor+mast for $40- at wreckers, I am not too concerned, and still have the old motor which I'll investigate "one day").
IF you are after a half-height function, look for the 8-pin motor - which is a quite bulky mutha, overall. If you see early KJ wrecks, certainly check them out, cos my early-2000 KJ ei has that motor.
I'm wondering if the workshop manual wiring diagrams would indicate (in MY02 updates etc) when the wiring to motor was changed..... don't have time to look into that just now.

Sorry to ask a question with probably an obvious answer, but what was the point of having a half-height function?
To avoid the antenna getting snapped off or something?

Yup something like that and also the mast is replaceable on those that supports the half-height function. Furthermore, it will reduce the chance the antenna bending out of shape too! Unlike the existing ones.

Antenna also looks a bit better at half-height IMO, doesn't stick out so much (ha ha yeah yeah pun fail), and worked just as well. Next best thing to a glass antenna.

I think i know how differentiate them by look at the power antenna. The ones with the half height has 4 grooves at the base of the antenna.
