The only engine I'd be going with would be a 3L manual or a 3.5L manual... You'd be able to pick a magna with one of those in it up for a similar price no doubt.

220,000km is a lot of k's on the motor, better be in good nick.

If it was a real low mileage car may be tempted and then convert to V6 as is not a real big job to do but being that sort of mileage I would not bother unless it is super cheap and in exceptional condition

i had one awhile ago, not too bad on fuel and quite slugs in comparison to the 3l models of the same age

IMO you'd be better off with the 6cyl. If fuel consumption is the reason why you're leaning towards the 4, consider this - I'm getting better fuel economy out of my TF Altera than I did in my 1.6L 4cyl '91 corolla...And that's around town. Highway driving, the magna leaves my poor old 'rolla for dead.

the good:

- runs on fumes...
- handles better than the 3.0L as it has a smaller motor and less weight at the front

the bad:

- no traffic light drags
- not great at overtaking on highway/country roads

basically if its just a car to get from A to B, the 2.4L does the job, if you need anymore out of it, you are looking at the wrong car.
Driven the 2.4L, 3.0L and 3.5L... I do enjoy them all in their very own way.

I currently own a TF 2.4L auto. It's a good car for going from A to B. Fuel is on par if not below my friend's 3.5L ( I have a very heavy lead foot, therefore having to work harder to carry the same amount). The engine is small and easy to learn if you are wanting to learn about motors. You have the modability of the later models athough the electronic side can get a little troublesome due to differing looms compared to the TH's onwards. Pathetic on highways (ie no overtaking..) I cannot stress that enough. Check log books for the last service, ensure that the last major service (200k?) has been done at least. Dunno about cost but I would think if everything is in order $3000 would be the max I'd pay for one.

From what i've heard the fuel economy isnt hugely advantageous over the 3L TEs (I know my 3L manual is excellent on fuel especially with my lead foot) and the sound and power from the V6 is so sweet, i'd personally keep looking for a 3L...

Also for a TE these days those kms are about average, just make sure you give the car and engine a good looking over for oil leaks etc, check service history, these engines will go forever if you look after them...

i'd keep the TR until you can afford a 3.0L or a 3.5L at minimum
