I might or might have not caused this. But the reality is that the gear knob came loose and it is starting to worry me that i will just lose it one day. Doesnt seem to have anything that was snapped off but i i can't put it back in. I was wondering if anyone has a clue how i can get it to the original state?

I'd just go to pick-a-part and pickup a new one, there's one screw on the front to remove the whole shifter from the rod.

Has the button come off or is the whole stick loose? Both are easily replaced.
From the pic, the button itself looks to have the plastic tabs broken off that hold the button onto the gearstick. Once you have a replacement button, putting it back on is as simple as aligning the spring to the circular tab on the inside of the button and clicking it down.

The clips doesn't look like it was broken or some sort. But there must be something broken because it keeps coming out.
The gear stick itself is fine, just the knob. The problem is actually finding the correct spare part name for it. :P

Go down Springvale road towards Clayton and on Centre Rd there is a wrecker called "Imlachs" (they have a website) - they have about 6 or so 3rd Gen Magna's (and an early Verada) there at the moment, there will be a shifter in at least a few of them...

IF you want me to look at it I am happy, I think I have a few spare shifters here we can raid a cap from
This is a common issue, Mits know of it and if they dont have a spare one in stock generally get one in over night
If you want me to look at it, I am in Ringwood East

Appreciate the offer Mal. Really do.
I'll exhaust the options commercially before i head around to grab from the members.
It's just funny how it popped up one day and never again stayed down.

My car had a dodgey gear shifter push button like that too, the tabs were broken of each side
Just go to your local Mistubishi dealer, I guarantee they'll have one in stock, my local dealer gave me mine for free so I cant see it costing much. Just make sure they give you the right one because there are few variations that all look real similar

I'll head to one when i have my lunch break tomorrow.
Wouldn't mind spending a couple bucks to have this sorted out. It's always this tiny bits that gets on your nerve

If you have no grace there I am also a "commercial" option lol
But as above, most keep them in stock as it is a common issue thus the chage in the SII TJ's
