So I have decided to retrim some pieces in the GT with carbon fibre cloth like it shoud have got from factory IMO

like seen here on the Bimmer

http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd257/dcaeroM3/carbon_alcantara_fabric_074_2.jpg

I have a basic understanding of trimming and I can cut and sew

what I am more concerned about is glues needed to attach to trim panels etc

Would 3m super 77 spray be good enough on plastics and what preperations would I need to make on the plastics before sticking on the cloth

Working with carbon fibre cloth is similar to fibre glassing...i use epoxy resins for good results and low odour...placing the article in a vacuum for best results....scuff the surface that you will be applying it too.
Best bet is too web search so you'll learn the various techniques involved.

I think he is referring to the carbon fibre textured leather like what the bimmer club is using,
like this, and yeah I think 3m super77 will be alright.

30 bucks plus postage from the states but I am not using the leather shown this will be proper pre preg CF like seen on the photo

I just want to know if I have to scuff the plastic first for better stick etc stuff like that

No, this is the leather

Also, that's not a pre-preg. Pre-preg has to be in the freezer always because it will cure if not.

If you want the real carbon fiber let me and I can provide you some.
I have the usual 3k twill weave in black or silver carbon, hybrid carbon kevlar (black/red, black/yellow, black/green and black/blue). I bought these before and haven't used them yet. If you planning to do an overlay using the real carbon fiber and haven't had an experience working on this, I suggest you use the polyester resin. The issue with the epoxy resin is that it creates heaps of bubbles while you are brushing the resin and it will be hard for you to manage all of those.

OMG you mean I can buy some from you
that red is what I was going to get but in the twill rather than plain
although I am digging that red

I ended up getting black from the UK for 30 bucks for a 1m by 35cm roll (that one was real not the leather as it is from a Model shop fro repairs to model aircraft)I am going to do bits in the corolla with that first (I dont car bout the Rolla as much as the 380)

I am going for the raw look like in the Bimmer photo so i am just gluing it

I found a DIY overlay guide so I wont need epoxy just gluing it to some interior pieces

DIY: How to overlay CF fabric on your interior trim panels

What you will need:
- 1 3M Super 77 or 74 Spray can glue (Home Depot or any hardware store)
- 1 Scissors
- 1 Razor blade

1. Cut the fabric to the size of the trims. Make sure the wave direction are all go same way before you cut, and make sure you leave about 1" longer on all sides of the trims.

http://www.bimmerpost.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=212272&d=1229657626

2. Clean the trims, let it dry and apply the 3M adhesive....Apply 2-3 layers of the adhesive.

http://www.bimmerpost.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=212273&d=1229657664

3. Put the fabric on and use your hand to get all the bubbles out....again make sure the wave are in the correct direction.

http://www.bimmerpost.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=212274&d=1229657699

4. work on all corners by pull and stretch the fabric.

5. cut the vent hole...again leave about 1/2" so that you can wrap the fabric around....you need to cut the 4 corners in order to have the have enough room for the fabric to fold and stick.

http://www.bimmerpost.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=212275&d=1229657745

6. apply adhesive all edges and wrap around all edges....sometime you need to let the adhesvie for about 1 minute before they start bonding affect.

http://www.bimmerpost.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=212276&d=1229657788

7. let it sit for 5-8 mins before you double check all edges and corners all fine. Done!! (During this 5-8 mins wait time, you can work on the other piece.)

http://www.bimmerpost.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=212277&d=1229657847

http://www.bimmerpost.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=212278&d=1229657847

*Before you actually start gluing, you should practice stretching and pulling the fabric on the corners before applying glues. This will give you an idea when you actual doing with glue.

That is awesome mate.
But what exactly is this material? laminated cf on cloth or textured vinyl cloth? Real CF don't have that cloth backing for sure.

Damn, i was gunna say that looks awesome..... but it isn't even yours!!!!

I have had limited luck with those spray glues wombat, I would recommend you get a tin of builder's contact adhesive unless you are SURE it is quality spray adhesive (and not craft spray adhesive)

well quick update before i go to bed

did a iPhone cover and I did use contact adhesive (geez I smell like a chem factory) bulk of it turned out very good but had issues with fraying will be knocking up another one after I get some sleep with a slighty different approach

issue is with the tucking of it and the fraying ends

thought of a solution just I am so tired I want some sleep

and i will get some pics too

Ok ordered some different fabric

(the one in the DIY)

Now I have to wait for it to arrive from the US

CF is just too loose to use as a wrap effectively

I will post up some pics later today

Hey Mecha,

Did you end up getting this done? Looking at getting some of this>> http://destronsgarage.com/carbon_wrap but guy has shop on ebay>> http://motors.shop.ebay.com/carbonmonster888/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=

Not sure when I will be ordering but if anyone else has attempted this please update if you can and what adhesive you used as being how harsh the Aussie climates can be found alot of the adhesives dont tend to last..

Cheers
