ok so heres how to remove your resonator boxes for a throatier sound, and how to widen your air pick up, and seeing as my other post got spammed with"welcome to AMC" and barina comments (neither were a bad thing) I figured I would make a new thread for the actual process of it, so get your tools here we go. NOTE: This is NOT a Cold Air Intake, it still picks up the same air as the other intake does, this increases throttle response a little and makes it a little throatier. I will be posting a CAI how to soon, i just need plans and parts from work, so for now heres the intake mod, cheers, ts90four
I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANYTHING THAT HAPPENS TO YOU OR YOUR CAR WHILE DOING THESE MODS, I HAVE PERFORMED THEM ON MY CAR AND THEY ARE FINE, IF YOURS DOES NOT WORK YOU HAVE DONE SOMETHING WRONG, DO NOT BLAME ME.
STEP 1: open the bonnet
STEP 2: remove resonator if you feel like it (makes louder throatier sound, but mods have to be done to the intake pipe to gain anything at all) if you dont skip to step 4.
http://i819.photobucket.com/albums/zz115/ts90four/100_1450.jpg
resonator removed: http://i819.photobucket.com/albums/zz115/ts90four/100_1448.jpg
STEP 3: CAP THE ENDS OF THE RESONATOR INTAKES IF YOU REMOVED THEM, I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH, YOU WILL LEAN OUT YOUR ENGINE AND IT WILL PING LIKE SHIT IF YOU DONT, then your engine will explode , so CAP THEM FOOLS. Juice tops are perfect, but dont get soft ones or they will get sucked in, i dont know from experience, but im sure thats what would happen. tighten the clamps for the resonator openings back up
http://i819.photobucket.com/albums/zz115/ts90four/100_1447.jpg
STEP 4: Remove the top of your airbox
http://i819.photobucket.com/albums/zz115/ts90four/100_1452.jpg
STEP 5: take your filter out and undo these three bolts
http://i819.photobucket.com/albums/zz115/ts90four/100_1453.jpg
STEP 6: remove bottom of box
http://i819.photobucket.com/albums/zz115/ts90four/100_1454.jpg
STEP 7: remove the single bolt holding the air intake in.
http://i819.photobucket.com/albums/zz115/ts90four/100_1451.jpg
STEP 8: remove the intake snorkel (whatever you would like to call it )
http://i819.photobucket.com/albums/zz115/ts90four/100_1458.jpg
STEP 9: Now cut the skinny opening off the end of the intake
http://i819.photobucket.com/albums/zz115/ts90four/100_1459.jpg
and sand the insides clean and smooth
http://i819.photobucket.com/albums/zz115/ts90four/100_1460.jpg
STEP 10: put everything back together, then check to make absolutely sure everything is back on and no tools are left in the engine bay, then drive it
If anyone else has plans on making CAI's or boxes or anything, show them off here so others get some idea, and if you dont want to tackle it, and you live in adelaide, then give me a pm, and I might be able to make you one for cost of the scrap plus maybe 5 bucks more to drive it to your place, if my plans for one work ok. At work we have galvanised Iron, zincalum, green, white, and tan colourbond, aluminium sheet, and stainless sheet, and all will be priced accordingly, obviously stainless is the best looking, but is also close on the heaviest and the most expensive, but if you like bling factor than by all means :). Also all of the air boxes I make are insulated so as to keep airbox temps to a minimum :)

Ok I cannot view a single picture. Can you put them in IMAGE tags?
Now if this is what I think, I've done this about 4 years ago...You take out the resonators on the intake and put McKormicks Spice lids in them, perfect fit, V6=V8 growl
All your image links are broken - they're cut short with ... in the middle.

well iv done something in my tf which was CHEAP CHEAP but works very well and looks alright
well so all i did was park my car into bunnings and shoved PVC piiping to see if everything will fit, all i got was 1m straight, 2 x 45degre bends and 1 90degre, used the proper pvc glue ... total of about $30
as you can see into the pic i got one of those adaptions from supercheap and instead of adding it from the maf sensor i did if from the box, the tube then runs down to the belly of the car and painted the tip black
(these are some old pics and currently it is gold and looks sweet

but not to sure what room you guys have, but you can prob muck around with it :D
When RPW modded my KS, when you remove the snorkel, you can see a rectangular black plastic cap. Remove it to reveal a hole. Enlarge it a little so you can fit a 65mm flexi hose. Connect one end of the flexi to the air box intake and the other down to the front bumper. Then use a circular saw, cut a 65mm hole. Go to Bunnings and buy a 65mm 45deg angle piece and fit it into the hole. Mark with a pencil the outline of the bumper curves and then grind it to match. Then hot glue the 45 deg piece in the hole and feed the other end of the 65mm flexi into it. For matching looks, drill another hole on the passenger side and also fit a 45deg piece. You can then feed a 65mm flexi from that into the engine bay to feed extra cold air into the engine bay.

Sorry cuicidl but were not from the bronx here, damn that looks ghetto!
The ONLY thing which made a difference was a meter of flexi-pipe from super cheap. Going into the airbox, around the battery (washer bottle has to come out for this) and down near the front bumper actually did help. everything else did not.

well i just went to bunnings myself and bought some bits and pieces for work, jsut some tools n stuff, but got some watering pipe for 5 bucks, and a hole saw, so ill be modding my box possibly tomoro after work, or if not then over the weekend for sure :D, then if later on i feel its not up to the task, ill make a custom one, still need some design to it, im thinking of maybe an encased pod with an insulated surround to keep the cool air cold :D

You could of spent $30 on a meter of flexi tubing from super cheap and 3 cable ties and have the same effect :D
Woo hoo. Found pics of my old car. Such memories.... Note air intake in drivers side bumper is plumbed back to air-box.

LOL @ TUFF
I actually was going to do something similar with my Corolla as the CAI crapped out and I dont have the money to replace it with another
instead I just repostioned the stock intake where the CAI was
But this is aussie at its best find what is available and strap it to the car! flexi garden pipe, PVC, whatever,
This is for the budget concious amongst AMC Tuff if it works more power to them and the engine is a win win

So whats the point of cutting off the thin end of the intake snorkle?
How is air being directed into the intake now if it just a hole with no route out of the engine bay?

lol Reminds me of some of the "mods" I've seen while shopping for a second hand car. PVC pipe in an engine bay would make me scream and run away. Ever wonder why factory forward facing air intakes on SUVs are mounted at screen level or higher? Anything mounted at bumper level becomes a giant vacuum cleaner for dust, bugs and water. Ever seen what a good gulp of water does to a running engine?

cobra82, the point is the original intake size is tiny, very very minimalistic, its a 60mm by 20mm hole at most, and by cutting it you effectively triple its size thereabouts, but now i will agree it sucks a bit more hot air, but it drives much better, i will be boxing it up soon

i did this mod and found no difference in throttle response. only a different sound even then it had to be at wide open throttle to be heard.
now, for added safety, put some glue around the spice lids mate. there's nothing stopping them from slipping out and being sucked into your combustion chamber. plastic in there is NOT good.

Actually the McKormicks spice lids have a lip on them, so they cant fall in :) which is why I recommend them instead of the gatorade lids ;)

I'm pretty sure there's some kind of plastic lip around the opening, on the very inside of the "port" where the resonator would otherwise fit in to. Kind of hard to explain, I think I still have an old Magna intake or two in the shed that has these on it.
Even those probably wouldn't help though, considering how thin the plastic is of a typical juice lid it could probably be bent or sucked inward quite easily. Personally i'd just whack a couple of brass welsh plugs in there. Get two in the right diameter (perhaps slightly over for a tight fit) and put those in instead. They're strong enough to hold in place, never slip out and the mod looks otherwise stock to anyone that wouldn't know better.
I'll admit having done this mod to a couple of Astrons in the past. It was only slightly louder on the intake side with no benefits to performance elsewhere (although these engines were very worn, so they didn't have much performance to begin with). It does make it easy to get at the transmission and shifter cables though, so i'll give it that, but I can't imagine you'd need to do much around that general area very often anyway.
That said, just saying what I know for the purposes of discussion. Your mileage may vary, exercise caution, stuff sucked into the combustion chamber does not make for a happy engine, etc...
did this mod also i used brass welch plugs. have now gone back to standard but am using hks mushroom pod. car has a definite performance increase nothing amazing but better than what i had before. have used a bit of tfi expandable intake pipe as cold air intake. i removed stock air intake and replaced it with the flexi pipe. one end in behind headlight and other end blowing onto face of pod. seems to work bit agricultural tho till done properly

I used the even bigger spice lids which go right over the top of the resonator inlet thingys......dont even need to crimp them down, they are nice and tight

I removed the intake resonators on mine quite a while ago (back when I had the TR executive), except that spice lids/gatorade lids seemed a bit too ghetto. So I measured it up and machined aluminium plugs which I hose clamped in there using the clamps that were already there.
Then I wrapped it all up in that silver adhesive thermo-wrap (aka. space junk :-P )
I'm running the K&N pod filter on mine and I'm noticing issues now that it's getting hot coming up to summer. It runs great at night and when the air temps aren't so hot, but when I'm in town and in the heat of the day it doesn't like it when I put my foot down. Kind of just chugs along..
The next port of call for me is to find some washers (or machine some up) to lift the back of my bonnet up about 1/4 inch, and to remove that rubber seal at the back to open the gap a bit more. This will help with air flow through the engine bay, and according to physics (ie. the venturi effect) the air flowing over my bonnet and up the windscreen should create a low pressure zone around where the bonnet meets the windscreen, and with a gap there going into the engine bay, it should suck hot air out of the engine bay, allowing more cold air to flow in from the front.
If that doesn't give the desired effect, next will be to cut some holes and put a vent over the exhaust manifold. Then if it comes down to it.. Pod box and CAI
