Gday peeps, just got back from overseas trip for 7 days and power steering on TJ is grinding and leaking.Checked the level before I went and it was very low, with slight grind at big turns,Topped up with valvoline power steering fluid about 150 ml .Now it's much worse.Still turning but grinding badly with any slight turn, you can hear a whiring sound medium pitch and feel it through the wheel constantly. Visible leaks now on concrete too.Hope I'm not up for too much as the CC is maxed after Singapore! Whats the worst V best case ? Thanks for your help in advance again:happy:

Power Steering Fluid is leaking from busted CV joints? No way man.
OP: Sounds like and issue with your power steering pump or the steering rack. Identify where the leak is coming from and this will assist in diagnosing the problem.

Yeah, degrease the pump, rack and lines then start the car and get someone to turn the wheel as you check the pump connections, lines and rack for any leaking. check the rubber boots, possibly one has torn and let dust and dirt in.

When air mixes with the oil the pump will complain, simply topping it up won't fix it. Be patient and wait for the air bubbles to leave the oil. Or get the oil changed and the system bled as per the manual. Mitsu oil works better than the castrol or valvoline stuff. Most of them leak, just keep topping it up - using 1 bottle of oil a year is not unusual. Leaks occur at the seal in the power steering rack. You will find most of the oil there, caked with dust.
Mine needs to come out to replace the tie rods - rattling joints - so I will replace the seals at the same time, if it can be done with ordinary tools and Mitsu do a kit - otherwise, I'm looking at a reco rack.

you can replace the tie rod ends without removing the steering rack, and a leak isnt normal, i havent topped mine up in 2 years-it uses none. if its leaking, it needs to be fixed.

When I had the magna, I also had the grinding noises and it turned out the steering rack was worn out and the joint thingy that steers the wheels at the end of the steering rack was on verge of breaking apart. I had them replaced at mitsubishi (bad decision on my part but it was merely a convenient choice to have it in john hughes vic park serv ice centre since I work in perth). I had to do it urgently as mum was using my car to ferry her clients around before she bought her own car.
