According to older threads about the steering-wheel remotes, the alloy frame of the steering-wheel should be pre-drilled to accept the mounting screws of the audio-remote. The shroud behind the wheel (towards the cluster) will need to be changed or modded to take the audio controls.
You will need a clock-spring with the extra "tracks" to cater for the steering-audio controls. Then make connections (or use the proper bits of loom) to get the wiring from audio-controls into horn-pad, through correct clock-spring as mentioned, from cluster side of clock-spring down steering column and under the dash to rear of audio Head-unit.
You will need a head-unit (OEM) that accepts the remote audio controls.... in my KJ there is a small extra connector in rear face of HU which has about 6 pins, one of these is the "Mute" wire from the car-phone connection point under the lower console near gearshift, and the remote audio controls take one other pin in the same connector. In my KJ (series I) ei this extra connector is at the top and pass side of the HU rear plate.
I bought a set of audio controls, clock-spring, all the loom bits a while back - either in AMC or EBay - but have yet to fit it yo my KJ. I know for a fact that the KJ ei HU I have WILL accept the remote control connection. I have the clock-spring (just hope its not damaged, they can be fragile), but I will have to try modding the shroud on the back of the steering wheel.
Search should bring up some older posts about this - the old posts are the only knowledge I have on this subject until I get stuck into my KJ with this "upgrade". If you have an after-market HU, I believe there is some kind of adaptor gizmo which (for a price) will "translate" the steering remote signals into a format the after-market HU will accept.

Thank you for your informative and detailed response

There is also a way to use these controls with aftermarket Headunits.
I have a unit that converts the signal and allows me to work it with my Pioneer headunit.
