Hey guys,

I was wondering what I kind of fuel consumption I should be getting for my TM?

Considering I have a recon motor + new head, i'd imagine i should get fuel consumption close to original specs... but i have no idea what the original specs are. How many k's should I expect to see from a full tank or how many litres per 100km?

Depending on how my day has been, i sometimes manually shift the auto trans - sometimes holding it out to around 4,500 - 5,000 otherwise i drive it 'normally'... Do these motors become really thirsty at high revs?

and is the tank in these gen1 really 60 litres? (never had the cash to fill it right up)

btw, this is a leaded carby auto (i'm running it off unleaded because the new head is ULP)... is the carby any different in a leaded model? I know I'm missing half the stuff that a ULP has (emission controls, etc)

Also, i wouldn't mind knowing some figures for the eci motors to compare

Thanks,
Bill

Can't give you exact figures, but the Astrons aren't known to be the lightest of fuel users...

yeah. fuel tanks are 64L and i havent ever bin able to fill it up either haha. too much. but $40 worth i usually get around 300km. this is wen i only take it to bout 4000rpm max. so i would probably b expecting around 400-450km on a full tank. my TM is ULP by the way and i run premium as i have set the timing forward to account for the extra few points of octane.

i think on one of the forums there was a post where someone was saying the 2.6L and the 3.0L magna had roughly the same fuel consumption? dunno how true it is but hey, wouldnt b surprised.

and i would probably assume that the efi models have a slightly better fuel economy than the carbs. it'd just make sense

I got 330km out of my 60 litre tank the other week. It was chewin through fuel like anything - and I didnt even have air con running. But I got my carby fixed the other day and im still waiting to see how much i can get out of a full tank. It would help if my guage worked properly. I filled up 60 litres the other day, got me by suprise...

i filled up and got about 400 out of 3/4 a tank, i forgot i was trying to see how much i could get out of a tank and put another $20 in it at 1/2 so lets say 1 1/4 full tank got me like 700 i think, ive got efi.

mine has a 74L tank, dunno if wagons and sedans are diff.... i get an easy 500km to a full tank. i usually fill at 500km on the trip meter (fuel gauge don't work) and it usually takes around 60-65L.

I have been known to put 72.5L in..... that was some nasty fuel surge

millert85 is right about the wagons....

A mild laugh was when I put 48L in a 44L tank...

Yep, my new 3.0 litre TF has about the same fuel economy, maybe slightly better then my old 2.6 EFI TP, both autos. Fuel economy on TP was pretty bad considering, I managed about 13 litres to 100 kms, so yeah pretty thirsty for a four banger. So very happy with the fuel useage in my TF compared, as it is larger in capacity, car weighs more and engine pumps out more power and torque :D .

my old tn used to get 440km a tank pretty much everytime,
my tf now gets 550-600 no probs on normal driving but soon as the foot goes down so does the petrol, i think i got 450 outa this last tank

best 450KM/32L
worst 250KM/32L

neither of which were on the highway, should be in the 500s on teh highway :D

i filled it up, and i got 360km until the fuel light came on... this is not good considering that full tank only lasted me 4 days... petrols getting more expensive too

anyone have ideas to improve the fuel consumption? (i drove my car like a grandma on this tank... and it only got me 360km )

what about the vacuum thingy on the distributor? does this have anything to do with fuel consumption and how do i check it's workin?

thanks,
Bill

EFI or carbi? that seems excessivly high even for an astron engine

His Avatar's a TM, them's all carby.That's right, it's a TM and a carby....

Also it's a reconditioned block with a new head - i think the motor shouldn't be tight anymore - i've done over 3,000 kms since it got put in. (those who know the story/grief behind this magna)

Thanks,
Bill

you could have your timing out.

The vacuum thing on your dizzy is extremely important, it advances the timing as you accelerate. To check, unplug the vacuum hose and plug the hose. Check the timing, it should be like 5 degrees, then plug the vacuum line back in, and the timing should be around 13 or somthing, and as you rev the engine the timing should keep advancing.

fuel consumption could also be because of a rish air/fuel mixture, adjusted by screws on the side of the carby.

your carby could just need a rebuild...

I have two hoses going to the vacuum unit? Disconnect both and plug them or only one of them?

My old distributor had only one on there, but we had to get another distributor - this one has two hoses... I'm not sure where the extra hose the mechanic put goes to...

My carby is fine... We took it somewhere and they stuck an analyser in the exhaust pipe and it was running pretty spot on (it was running a little on the lean side)... He didn't adjust it because he said it's fine how it is
