Well i had the chance to go for a drive in Alscall's car the other day when he was over for a retune and noticed that his 1-2-3-4-5 lights in his auto display on the dash didnt change when it was left in drive...
I said to him....dont your lights change when the gears do...
and he said yeah..and he reached across and flicked it into tippy...and the lights changed according to the gear it was in.
I said ..nah....mine works in Drive as well as in tippy, though ,once in tippy mode ,the 'D"light goes out and only the numbers change.
So,is my TH Sports tippy unique in that the gear lights light up the numerals in drive and tippy, and there was some thing different about his.
Oh ,he has a KJ awd Verada.

My TJII exec with tippy doesnt change with the numbers either. I reckon it would be better if it did as i like to know what gear im in.

yeah mine only lights up for the gear I'm in. EG: if i were in drive the light would be around 'D', if i were in 1st the light would work for 'L', same with every gear......

Yeah my KL only shows D and 1-5 when in tip-zilla mode. I reckon the 1-5 while in D would be pretty cool though!

Hi guys. I have a 99 TH sports and the gear indicator in the instrument cluster changes to show which gear is being used with the car in D. It doesn't change in my dad's TJ LE unless it is in tiptronic mode. Is this specific to the Sports models or to the TH? I'd be curious to know as well

Tiptronic will only change when you are in tiptronic mode.
Non Tiptronic will show what ever position the shifter is in
The reason? With the Tiptronic your shifter is only in drive or in tiptronic mode, there is no 3,2,1 position

Mal, I think you missed the OP's point...
he's saying in D the lights come on to tell him which gear he's in, along with the light corresponding with D.
didn't happen that way in my auto. might be specific to Sports models?

The reason? With the Tiptronic your shifter is only in drive or in tiptronic mode, there is no 3,2,1 positionbut Maggie's original post states that when he is tippy mode, the 'D' light goes out and it lights up the gear number?? Based on Alscall's car, and your experience, the norm is that the gear number won't light up when in tippy mode, does this mean Maggie has a freak box??

no....what i am saying is ,that when in "d' the numbers still light up to show what gear i am in,and the "d" light is still on
When i shift to tippy...the "d ' light goes out ,and onlty the gear numbers display....

Just to clarify, that is what happens with my car as well. In D (non tiptronic mode) the indicator in the dash indicates whatever gear the car is in. When in D, D lights up and the number of the gear also lights up (1 through 4). In tiptronic mode, the D indicator goes out, but the gear indicator remains on, to show which gear the car is in.
I also have a TH Sports, so you aren't alone Maggie!
This may be unique to the TH Sports. If I recall correctly, the tiptronic wasn't available on non sports TH cars, was it? So other THs might not have it, and TJs don't seem to do it. Unless anyone knows different?

do TH sports have 4 or 5 gears?... because if they are a different transmission they might have just changed the way the display works.
my TL AWD in 'D' will just have the 'D' light on, in tiptronic it will indicate 1 - 5. i wouldnt mind knowing what gear it is running in auto though, i get surprised sometimes when i change into tip to use engine breaking expecting to be in third or fourth and suddenly have 5 gear changes to wait for.

4 speeds in a TH. My dad was a little disappointed his TJ didn't indicate the gear in use outside of tiptronic mode like my TH Sports does. His TJ is also a 4 speed tiptronic auto.
