can i ask why insurance?

insurance policy dose not cover a torn CV boot.

depends which cv is it my front passenger can cost from $99 to $160 some have 1, 2 or 3 year warranty.

p.s thats price base on just a FWD but should be around the same price.

Th OP is saying should he change the whole drive shaft assembly as insurance against a failure that is about to occur, or should he change the boot.

My opinion is to get the boot and get a good drive shaft mechanic to check the joint, clean out, re-grease and put a new boot on.

If you can do the work yourself then just replace the boot. If you have to pay to get it done at $80/hr then might be wise to replace the CV as well.

Did you get to see how much grit or water was in the boot? That will give some idea of possible issues that might come up with the old CV.

How many km has it done, how many power on U turns, twisty roads? thats all a consideration too as all reduce CV life.

Cheers,
Alan

AFAIK the AWD shafts are different to the FWD ones. I wonder what his prices for them would be.....

Just be very careful you know what you are getting. Reconditioned means different things unfortunately. Used to factually mean "brought back/restored to new condition." Now it can mean cleaned up, some new bits added, repainted. I've seen CVs being "reconditioned" by being degreased, crack inspected, then if not cracked were deburred with a high speed grinder, regreased and a new boot fitted, but same old very worn joint.

Cheers,
Alan
