View Full Version : Continuing car vibration after road bump
I've been a TH Magna owner for 2 weeks. The car seems to ride alright, although the shocks seem a little too hard for my liking, but, irrespective of speed, the car developes a continuing vibration after hitting a road defect like a bump or pot-hole. If I back off the throttle momentarily the vibration stops and the ride normalises until the next road defect. I've had a mechanic look at it and he could not find any problem with cv joints, drive train, steering etc. etc. He seems to believe that the problem could be caused by a 'converter' in the transmission designed to equalise revolutions between the engine and wheel drive train. I used to be a pretty good 'back-yard' mechanic, but know absolutely nothing about modern front-wheel drives. I see that several people have had similar problems with their cars with no rready solution to hand. Anybody have any thoughts on the matter?

1st Welcome to the forum.
I can't offer much help with your problem as I have never experienced something like yours that hasn't been caused by a front end problem. I have had a similar thing once that was caused by wear in the front suspension.
I fail to see how hitting a bump can cause a problem with the torque convertor in the auto trans.(But I'm no expert either). All I can suggest is maybe get a 2nd opinion from someone else. Also maybe check all the engine mounts to make sure none are damaged.
I'd be interested in hearing what was causing it if and when you find out.

Could be worn shock absorbers or strut mount bushes. I'd also have a look at your engine mounts, they have a tendency to wear out on the Magnas.

Even though it may not be the CV it is possible its the driveshaft itself, I cant remember what it is exactly though.
Few people have had similiar problems from the shafts, also the drivers side engine mount could definately be the issue.

check all your wheel nuts ,some aftermarket ones can let go
Thanks for all the input guys, I'll follow up as soon as I can and let you know. May be a tad tardy in getting to it as a 6 ton truck tried to occupy the boot of our other car two days ago and we are awaiting an assessors opinion as to whether we are down to one car or not.

Good 2nd hand ones are hard to find. I went to get the top right mount once, I found one at the wreckers that looked ok. However halfway through pulling it out the thing spilt. So I ended up getting a new Mackay one from Bursons for $90. To my surprise they had it sitting on the shelf.

G'day guys,
just new to the forum but i found it interesting to see a post on vibration. I too am experiencing wheel vibration in my TF Altera. It feels almost like you're driving over a bumpy piece of road and occurs around the 55 - 70 kph mark when under normal accelleration. It doesn't happen every time, but is noticeable.
I'm praying to God it's nothing to do with the tranny. The car only has 87,000 kays on it. Under harder accelleration it doesn't seem to happen, but when it does it really is just like driving over a bumpy section of road.
Peter.

This might be a long shot but I wonder if a tyre/s have been filled with puncture shield goo? Would be an effort to get them off the rims :(

Well.........I'm hoping it's something simple like that. To be honest, whilst there has always been a lot of talk about how poor "old" Magna boxes were, I've only heard good stuff from the 95 models onwards.
Here's hoping. Car runs beautiful other than this problem.

Hi guys,
My TE is doing the same thing. Was REALLY bad so I put new struts in - heaps better but still there.
Found a broken engine mount - went to wreckers and they sold me a new one for $65 :-). Bit better again. its still there though.
My next step is to check the other engine/gearbox mounts then replace the front suspension bushes one by one until it is sorted.
Surely it cant be anything else.
Cheers,
Scott.

Hi All,
Check your drive shafts, the drivers side was the cause of the vibration on my wife's manual (the inner joint that attaches to the intermediate shaft was the cause). It is the easy one to replace as you don't have to drain the trans / gbox.
Swapped the shaft with a spare that I had at the time and all good now.
Except for the diff whine that is. LOL.

Yep i had the same thing, basically if you get vibration under acceleration its definitely your drive shaft, as too having vibrations after you hit a bump thats a classic symptom of broken engine mounts.

Pretty straight forward to replace? No suprises?
