If this thread is in the wrong place please move- thanks :)
I bought a set of 18's off ebay yesterday, they were Speedy Envy MkII's with NEW tyres for 500 and no
gutter rash so i was very happy with that.. but today i got down to sydney and tried them on my TE and
they were at least 1cm out from the top of the front guards so I had to cancel the transaction :(:(:(.. but thing is
he thinks the wheels were only 7.5 wide, but surely they would have fit if they were? ive seen other members
on AMC with the same wheels and they were 8.5.. so im thinking they would have been 8.5's? and does that
mean i can only have 8's on the car legally?

what offset where the wheels?

What offset did the wheels have? 7.5" wheels with 36-40mm offset should fit OK and not stick out.
What size tyres?
Cheers,
Alan

Offset may have been wrong? Legally youre only allow to go 2" wider than factory (. I "think" factory for a TE was 6-7" wide (dont quote me) so yes 8" are legal but you also have to look at the profile of the tyre and overall rolling diameter.
Have a read of the below, better to hear straight from the horses mouth

The Offset from other people on the clubs wheels that were the same was 38. but the seller did not know, So i just assumed 'Speedy' only made one type
of 18' Envy MkII wheel all with uniform offsets?
sorry Polvo, but that's a bad assumption.
different cars need different offset wheels so wheels are made in a range of offsets.
- from my experience, there's normally a big difference between FWD and RWD vehicle offsets, but the 3rd Gen Magna seems to be much the same as a Falcon.
Read up on the link that Sky-na posted - it's a bit technical, but should tell you what you need to know to keep it legal.
FYI, I'm pretty sure NSW regs let you go 1" wider than what's on your tyre placard, but to get 2" wider you have to have it engineered and that's only applicable for cars over a certain weight.

S**t the Wheels came off a 200sx (RWD).. so in the future should i stick too looking at wheels that came off falcons? i have a list of cars that share the 5x114.3 stud pattern and i guess me in my ignorant way figured that if the offset was around a certain number and same with the width than it would be ok and fit.. im not worried so much about the nitti gritti legal side of things.. i just cant have the wheels exceeding the guards..:headbange

Look for wheels from Falcon AU onwards, Magna, Camry, and most Honda's.
Anything 7-8" wide and +35-45mm offset should fit fine.
8" wide and +35 will be parallel to the guards.

get the offset of these changed
my guy charges $20 per wheel to do this
most place that repair wheels will be able to change the offset

Like Oggy said, most rims will come in different offsets. I wouldn't restrict yourself to just looking at Falcon rims - I nearly bought a set of rims off an import, but they happened to be +35 - just make sure that whatever you're looking at has an offset in the +35 to +42 area. It should be marked somewhere on the rim and normally starts with 'ET' (ie 'ET38' means an offset of +38mm).

What do they do? Machine metal off the inside of the hub? Is that legal?

mmmmmmmm.........not an expect, but realistically,if a wheel has a certain offset, then feasably it is in the depth of the "hub"area where it bolts on that would give you your offset...so if a Falcon has a 35 offset,by removing material from the hub, will "pull"the wheel in..???

yeh thats all they do.. depending how much meat there is depends how much you can change the offset

Theres actually a thread around here somewhere where a member got defected for rims and the likes. Ended up having 19s or 20s and got them passed due to offset and correct width.
EDIT: Was TJWOODY heres the post.

up to 9.5" wide rims will fit on a 3rd gen. I can't remember the offset, but I think they're +35 off the top of my head.

9.5 will fit without sticking out? should have got staggered wheels!

Really!?! then i wonder why the wheels i tried on my mine wouldnt fit? they were for a RWD 200sx would that be the
reason? bigger offset for drift cars or something?

yep, offset has to be right. too small and they'll stick out too far, too large and they'll foul on the suspension.

I have 18x8 on my TE, the fronts stick out by about 2mm.
These are 35mm offset
To resolve I have a set of Sports Wagon flares to go back on (just need to get them painted)
Also plesae remember that changing the tyre placard is illegal.

2mm.. really? is that far out enough to be a problem? or you just wanna put flares on?

legally the rim and/or tyre cannot protrude past the bodywork of the car.
a bit of neg camber and flares can hide about 10mm or so.
