i hope someone can give me some idea of whats going on or a solution
a friend of mine has a 95 TS magna, as far as i can tell its got a few parts that i believe to be veradafied.
he lost his car key for it, changed over the ignition, and now starting it is intermittent at best, he took it to an auto-electrician, and was told that to start it, they disconnected the battery and put it back on, left the key in the on position for an hour and then it would start, now from what i can tell its got an immobilizer as he says his key had a black plastic covering over the key, but i dont know if it does or not. any idea's or suggestions?

The code for the immobilizer is in the ignition barrel not in the key head itself on a TS so you can use any key that works.
My son had the same issue after I changed his ignition barrel, the car would sometimes start but most times it wouldn't, you turn the key and nothing. It took 2 weeks for a auto sparky to sort it out.:wtf:

ts magna has a prick of a setup on it... if the barrel is tampered with then the immobiliser will be tripped and the car wont start
the barrel communicates with the ecu via 4 wires (supply, gnd, clock, data) and if alls good the car is allowed to run
last one i had to fix required a new barrel ($300 from mitubishi 3 years ago)

A couple of earlier threads exist on this. But to summarise:
Temp fix: Leave the key in the ignition. Doesn't need to be turned on. Wait 30 minutes. Car will start. After this, the car will start first go as long as you haven't pulled the key out. Pull the key and you reset the 30 minute wait period. You could leave the key in permanently, use a towel to hide the fact it is there, and use a second key to lock/unlock the car.
Permanent fix: Remove the immobiliser module from the bottom of the ignition barrel. Cut it open carefully. There is a white disc on the shaft, which gets pushed off the shaft by a spring when the ignition barrel is removed. Throw away the spring, push the disc back on. If its not a tight fit like mine was use superglue. Reassemble the immobiliser, tape it up to hold it together. Put it back on. Test out. All fixed.

The immobiliser design on the 95 TS is an early effort to safeguard the car from theft. There are no electronics in the key, nor is there an aerial ring like in gen 3 cars.
The ecu needs a signal from the immobiliser as the key is turned. This is achieved by a white plastic disc cutting an optical signal inside the immobiliser.
If you pop the ignition lock - a thief might use a slide hammer - the plastic disc is pushed off the shaft by a spring and it will no longer turn. No start, thief runs away.
The workings of the immobiliser is not described in any manual I have seen, and the "wait 30 minutes" trick is not common knowledge - I had to find this out by trial and error. I pulled the barrel to lubricate it, as it was very dry and stiff. My immobiliser has been held together ny nasking tape for 3 years now, with no problems.

OP: "as far as i can tell its got a few parts that i believe to be veradafied."
If the car has small stickers on the rear fixed glass saying "immobiliser fitted" then it is a standard factory fitment.
