Hi

I recently aquired some KR/KS door trims with the speaker mounts so i will soon be replacing the dash mounted 4" speakers with 6" door mounted. My plan is to get 6" with tweaters and mount the tweaters in the factory 4" holes.

At the same time I am thinking of setting up my rear 6x9s to run of an amp. At the moment they are running directly off my Sony head unit and and they seem to sound worse (less bass and punch) than when they were running of the standard head unit from a VRX magna i was running for years.

Am i right in thinking runing the 6x9's of an amp mounted in the boot will improve the quality?
Whats a good amp for this? or what amp specs would i need? (i have never installed an amp so don't know much about them)

oh and my head unit does have a pre-out so i can run an amp as far as i know.

Really wouldn't bother. I've left the factory 6x9s in mine running off the headunit as they're nearly inconsequential to sound quality in my experience - fronts are Alpine Type-R splits running off an amp and the bias is set so that the rears only provide enough volume to provide a bit of balance.

My rear 6x9's are not factory (TS exec didn't come with any rear speakers). They are pioneer 3 ways.

Which usually sound pretty average anyway. Again, not worth it.

So your buying a set of splits am I correct?
Running speakers off a seperate amp will sound alot better then running them off the deck
Depending on how into music you are and how much you wanna spend on your system (you have a sony deck so im guessing not much lol), then I would just grab a 4ch amp to run all your speakers from
Choosing the right amp you will need to set a budget and work out what speakers you are going to run (give us a model number for the speakers and we'll work it out) and make sure your deck as 2 pre-outs

Amplifying front speakers would offer much more of an improvement to sound quality than the rears. A subwoofer would be preferable over 6x9s as well for bass reproduction.

+1 for focusing on front speakers too

they are the closest to you, and if you sound deaden and set up the door properly, the difference in bass compared to the 6x9's would be negligible

Thanks for the replies guys. General consensis seems to be to run new front 6" speakers of an amp. I am assuming this would require atleast a 2 channel amp?

Also where would you mount an amp if you were just running the front of it? I am thinking the boot would be silly as you would be running cables all the way to the boot then all the way back again to the speakers.

Can I ask you to do a Quick Wire check, Just to make sure your Rears are in Phase with your fronts...
Even off a 55x4 Sony Head unit your 6x9's should be showing some low end.
Quickest way to do this is to Fade your stereo to the rear, then Adjust balance to the left, and then to the right If your Bass improves on one side then gets weaker as you
introduce the other side, then they are out of phase and you will just need to swap the + and - Speaker wires on one 6x9 only..

Yes 2 channels at least, 4 channels bridged depending on hardware selection.

Mount it anywhere you like as long as its cool and has ventilation.

either that or do as i did and get a 4ch amp and chuck it under your passenger seat and amp them all up. seems to do the job for me. i found that i downtuned the rears as they were overpowering the crisp clear sound i wanted from the front but there's still plenty of bass coming from them.
