You have to sit the SW in the box correctaly for a start and then work out a angle for the box so that the sound does not bounce of any panles and hit back on the SW. This is what reverb is and you will want to avoid it to get the best possible preformance out of your SW.

My mate had a lets say low powered sub + amp combo and we found that it was loudest when it was faced away from the cabin toward the tail lights. You only really face it into the cabin for SQ reasons. As well we found that by firing the sub into the back right light( if you are looking through the ski hole from the front or from the cabin ) that it was louder than anywhere else. Funny, just play around and see where in the boot you like you sub. :D

Thats the best way to do it as every car is different, and everyones ears and taste in music if different as well. Let us know where you liked it.

this is only what i do/think/ been told
facing the subs towards you will make it louder obviously but the cound quality wont be there ......
the best place to put them is facing the back corners so they bout off the back and into the cabin u should find it sounds much cleaner then .....
though there are lots of diferent opinions around so some will say im right some will say im wrong .... just experiment and do what u think sounds best

I had mine facing back in my lancer (almost exzact same shape boot & interior, on a smaller scale) & it was definately louder that way, but as for SQ?... don't make much difference... facing it to the ski port is mainly for asthetics...
Hey
I remember hehehe, I had to go thru this phase!! :bowrofl:
ATM, i have the 2 12s in a sealed box (two seperate 1.1cu ft compartments) and they face backwards horizontally. I have tried facing the two forwards, upwards and downwards (wasn't safe to drive around unless i modified the box). Anyways, in conclusion, facing down is just stupid, up isn't as loud, but i say no sq increase, facing the back seats and facing the rear are exactly the, but i like facing the rear, for when ppl look at ur car in car parks etc :doubt: ...

I face mine forward because i was looking for SQ in my system but for SPL face it backwards.

BACKWARDS!!!!!
its actually better for both SPL and SQ!!! :D
Go here and read this

Technekly neways
the best way to get the answer to your question is to get a mate to help you, you sit in the car, and pop the boot for him/her to change the sub position whileyou listen. its better for whatever yo think. I might think backwards, you might think forwards.
good luck

just remember that u listen to it with bootlid open and closed, as it sounds different. with ski port open (not sure if TJ has it, but i do):)

sub+closed boot(like when you're driving.... ) = sub facing backwards, at the back
according to the site
BUT like i said, that's all techikal like eh??
move it around and listen to it!! see where YOU think it sounds best!!
NOTE: Me and a mate tested this with his 2 kecker L7 12's(two 600.1's in parallel as power, so about 1200 W to each) and it does sound better at the back than at the front, facing backwards, but its harer to tell with the amount of rattles his poor little mazda 323 puts out

when you have a sedan and not a hatch you should face the sub forwards. the reason for this is when you face it backwards ie. out of the boot, then the sound bounces off the back then towards the front. the sound will be louder if you face it backwards, but there will be a delay and you lose sound quality and that sucks  . i would say face it forwards. you can carpet the back and make it look like its not even there and make it fancy on the front so that it has a good visual effect when the back seats are down or the centre. :D

thanks guys you have shed some light on the situation i'll do a bit of experimenting before i build a permanent box to fit but i am leaning towards putting it forward mainly because it wont be affected as much when the boot has stuff in it as i would presume that any items (suitcases etc) will put everything out of wack.

actually there would be more of a delay if you had a wagon not a sedan as the bass has to travel further until it finds a panel to bounce off, imo you wont notice a delay if you have sub around 10" 12" size, as you go up in sub size the more of a delay you will notice as it takes longer to pound out a sound :P
i found when i had my pintara that facing it forwards or backwards made no difference what so ever, after many trial n error sound tests using subwoofer testing songs, in car no difference, outside of car lotsa difference. if you have a severe boot rattle face it forwards, otherwise people will hear a chunk chunk chunk as you drive past which is not cool ....otherwise face it back n you get the cool "omg subwooofer" when you open the boot with other people around.

right
lets say your sub is 1m from the actual boot lid
so the sound has to travel and extra 2m
speed of sound = 330m/s
so it takes and extra 2/330s (0.0061s) to get to you
OMG  that's HUGE!!!!
So much difference!!! :doubt: :doubt: :doubt:
absolutely no diff
go to the site and actually read it, the guy plotted the sub wave path from a sub to about where people sit and it does work in a magna, i tried it with a bloke at uni, he sat in the car, turned up the music then popped the boot, i got out and opened it, and he reckoned that it sounded a bit louder.
so the guy's not bs'ing
