View Full Version : Suspension noise on TE?

When driving on rougher sections of road I notice a vibration in the front RH drivers side. Is it a problem with the suspension or a loose panel because when I hit the panel it sounds slightly loose. Should I just upgrade the suspension?

My car is a 1996 TE Executive auto which I'm doing up a bit with the 3.0L with 17" Alloys (not lowered yet), everything else stock. I've owned it for over 4 years and have had no problems with it at all apart from CV joints. Its been a great car.

I use my car mostly for faster highway driving and on rougher sections of road this noise is much more noticable.

I have the same car as well. What I've seen, most Magnas make some rattle at the front and it gets worse with worn suspension bits. Then again, it could simply be just some loose bolts there....
Have you ever changed shocks to it? If not, that could be one reason. Also the strut top plates wear and make noise. Wheel bearing?
There are many posts regarding this issue, see what you can find using the Search, but those above mentioned are generally the main culprits.
And it gets worse with harder, lowered suspension and low profile tyres.... :tired:

I did the wheel bearings & front struts on mine ('96 KE Verada) & it is a pleasure to drive again. Still have the slightest rattle in the right rear strut. Oh well one thing at a time.

as above.. i have just replaced the front shocks in mine because they were absolutely gone after 185000
at first it was just the light rattle on really rough sections of road, but they deteriorated fast and eventually
the whole dashboard would shake with a moderate bump.. but i put some fairly cheap 'optima's' in there with some
18's and its great :D no more rattles and handles 10x better than standard shocks. (the rear shocks are next)
i doubt its your panels, as i know plenty of people with the same issue, but look at tightening them anyway haha :D

Nah, it doesn't affect handling of the car. Car feels totally stable on the road. Over a bigger bump (like a speed hump, or driving off a gutter) there is no noise. Its very noticeable when you are driving on rough road that causes lots of constant vibration, such as little bumps or a rough gravel road. It sounds like something is vibrating, or rubbing. Maybe its the Strut Tops as described before?

I've never changed the shocks in my car. To be honest I quite simply use my car to get myself from place to place. But I do plan to lower it a couple of inches (not too low, only slightly), looking at kingsprings for the lowering, and will fully colour code it, there is a photo of my car (as of now) below. I'll probably get the suspension checked out eventually.

My parent's recently bought a TJ (White 3.0L Executive, May 2001) and it doesn't make this noise. But that car only has 97,000ks. I bought my car at 180,000ks, replaced timing belt at 190k, CV joints at 200 and 215k, and kept it regularly serviced and have had no problems with the engine and transmission and now its at 255,000ks and going beautifully.
