G'day again guys,
I was just wondering if any of you know the specs of a TL VRX exhaust so that I can get my exhaust done at an exhaust place the exact same way. If you don't know, do any of you know if putting any less restrictive exhaust on a standard TL will increase its power to 163kw and 317nm or does it have to be exactly the same as a VRX exhaust to achieve this.
Thanks.
Hey dude, the VRX exhaust is a 2.4" pipe with a centre muffler, and a semi-straight rear muffler (No resonator like the exec ones). Another option if you are looking for power would be a 2.5" redback catback system (Bolt-on application), it is a fair bit louder, but will make more power as its a bit less restrictive (increased piping diameter, better flowing muffler). To turn your exhaust into a sports/vrx exhaust, you would need to remove the resonator at the rear axle (Might want to confirm this is still here on the TL's?), and replace the rear muffler with a sports one. The piping diameter will be the same.

Thanks for your quick and helpful responce Life. But in putting a better exhaust on I don't want it to sound "farty" or like a 4cyl with a big exhaust like I hear on a couple of TLs getting around. I want it to sound good, loud but not to the point like where I describe above. I have heard a couple of THs and TFs that sound really racey almost V8ish with a loud exhaust (and have driven a TH manual with a nice sounding but not stupid sound exhaust before). Can I achieve this sound and have the power I want.
Check out this video clip dude, this is Annese's old TE's Redback exhaust - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a7o48Nx6QBQ

SH*T that sounded awesome, and how much was that with the cost of fitting. Cause if it's under $600, it'd be worth it or actually, what do u recon I should get first? Sports suspension or that exhaust?

If your only getting a muffler put on it'll be like $60

You can get the Redback system for $370 delivered (http://www.neebs.com.au/default.asp?cmd=products&ProductGroup=681&Search=magna). I've got one fitted to my car.
The front section was too long for my cat converter and needed a trim, the rest of the system fitted up without drama.
I found it too quiet for my tastes and changed the rear muffler but I can't blame the exhaust for that.

you are correct Life (don't get a big head) the TL VRX that i have does not have a resonator near the rear axle, it just has a middle muffler and the free flowing rear muffler which gives it the extra performance to the standard cars

So where is the resonator in the exhaust system and how would I go about taking it out? And would doing this increase my performance and make the sound better or would I also need a better rear muffler?

keep in mind the exhaust on my TE isn't the bolt on redback system, they're a lot quiter than that apperently, mine was all custom piping etc by the exhaust place and it's probably a different model redback rear muffler...
edit: I gotta get a video of the exhaust on my VRX, the rear muffler must've been changed because it sounds soo nice, way better than my TE I rekon

I was actually thinking of this. Either cat-back with 3inch pipes out each side at the back or maybe I'll just take the resonator out, leave the rest stock from the cat to the rear muffler with 3inch pipes out each side at the back ofc.

DO NOT take the resonator out!!
Just add another rear muffler (lukey or magnaflow) and get a redback catback system

How come the resonator should stay in??

Well unless you want your car to sound like a wet fart and raspy as anything then by all means take it out
But I will garranty you'll put it back in cause you cant take the noise, and being auto it'll be worse

I second this, TL-TW is somehow different from earlier 3rd Gens. I put mine back in, it sounded terrible.
Try bigger Cat, sports muffler - Lukey LR2779 ( basically an aftermarket equiv.) Got mine sounding nice now.

Annese is correct. The bolt on redback systems are pretty quiet, not loud at all.
I have a redback centre section (muffler and reso, same as my exec 3.0 had but thicker pipes) with the little lukey bolt on rear muffler, sounds nice. The redback rear muffler makes it a fair bit quieter than the lukey, think it's due to the size of the actual mufflers.
