I'm not very familiar with the boot of his car so I haven't offered him a lot of advice on this but is there any particular component of that boot which rattles a lot that can be isolated? Any way expanding foam/filling materials can be utilised?
As much as I would love to sell him TONS of deadening, I would like to know if he could prevent the problem rather than addressing the outcome of the problem ie the rattles.

the main rattle in the boot is usually caused by the torsion bars (used to hold the boot open). you can wrap them in tape and see that helps.
other than that, I would tighten every nut and bolt in the boot like the tail-lights, the rear garnish, everything... if it still rattles after that, sound deadener is probably the only option.
cheers,

I don't know about the TF boot but my TR was having epic boot rattle issues, sounded awful.. I just placed thick cardboard between the boot lid and frame and the majority of rattle is gone! I'm also planning on sound deadener now as an extra measure.

I'm sure he can take some information from that. I'm sure hes going to be appreciative, any more ideas?

I used one cable tie and tied these torsion bars so they were tight, hasn't affected anything and has eliminated all my rattles
so yes i agree with wookiee, give this a go before doing anything else!

I think the 98 models still come with the 2 piece boot. If you wedge foam in there it will stop a lot of rattles.
Foam under the number plate.
Check the exhaust heat shield.
Look at opening one of the air vents ( I think passenger side ) in the boot.
I ran out of deadening so I filled my boot with carpet underlay, boot weighed a tonne.
Unfortunately the Magna is not very well designed in the boot area for subwoofers. When I had the Bora, I only needed minimal deadening compared to the magna to stop all the rattles.

check your number plate too, often vibrations from that as well, some sticky tape foam strips will do fine, this along with the advice above should be enough to stop those rattles :D

Are the arms holding the boot on rubbing or sitting on top of the sub box?
If they are it will vibe BIG time.

I also use expanding foam in all the holes between the boot frame and actual lid...... then planning to dynamat over that

Worst thing to vibrate is a spolier, not much can be done to stop them vibrating tho
Unless you remove it

yep that is ver true.... iv done a few other things which has reduced the vibrating though it is the spoiler where the noise is prominent. especially the brake light on the spoiler:(
