A mate of mine's folks are upgrading their car soon, and my mate's wondering how much their current car is worth, so he can make an offer on it.
The car's a stock standard 1996 TS Executive, 6cylinder automatic. It has approximately 250K on the clock, and is in pretty good condition.
How much do you think it's worth?

I think he should start the offers at $5000 especialy since the kms are so high. Also its an auto which isn't as valued as much since they are slower and have slightly more problems with magnas, I would pay around $3500 for it myself but expect most to wilingly pay just over $4,000. Start with $5000 I think. You can get a 3L V6 Verada for around 5 to 6 so starting at 5 should be okay.

Also this might help you. Noticed the average kms however. http://www.redbook.com.au/Vehiclesearch/price.asp?key=MITS96DQ&veh=y

A guy from work got a TS V6 man for 3G, but not in the best of nick. It all depends the condition and whats under the bonnet.
I know 2nd gens are going for 5-6G, but i would take much under 9 for mine, seeing it's almost a KS with new donk, 18's, leather etc etc

Yeah haven't actually seen your car TZABOY but the thing is it would be really hard to sell a 2nd gen with a few mods for $9K + since mods don't really increase your resale value that much in comparison to how much they cost you. Like I said I haven't seen your car but for just over $9,000 It's in the same price bracket as a 3.5L TH Exec.

yeah i know what your saying, i just wouldn't get rid of it for less than that (at the moment), which means i've gotta keep a hold of it which doesn't fuss me at all

I was thinking more around the $2.5-3K mark (being that it's got highish k's), but what about trade in values?
That's about right for a trade in.

I have never seen a V6 Magna advertised for anything less than $3,000. Trade in yes, but not for a private sale. Even if the kms were high you could recond or replace the engine and it wouldnt be too expensive. Thing is high kms means quite a lot of a newish model car but when you are comparing 200,000kms to 250,000kms to a car that is around 10 years old, although there is a price difference it is not as significant purely cos u cant justify a $3000 or so increase in price just because it has lower than average kms when you can recond/replace the engine for a fair bit less than that. I would start at $5,000 and work down from there.
P.S. TZABOY yeah ur smart by keeping it, if a car is worth more in your mind than its current resale value, your best keeping it for as long as possible until say for example the price of a TE magna and a TR/TS magna are not much different at all and you can get a significant upgrade for hardly any extra cost. This is the same with my car, as it is immaculate inside and out and the paintwork still looks new, that's how often it has been garaged by previous owners and how often i keep it clean etc. Also my car has complete body coloured F+R bumpers and side strip as well as body coloured side mirrors and window frames. All of this is in a nice clean looking paris white and the car looks great. This was all done by a previous owner and it looks so much better than an average TR magna with greyness everywhere so I'm keeping it for as long as possible. Had one chick who thought my car looked like it was worth around $15,000 from looking at it from the outside. Oh was like.. wtf?? damn.... So I'm keeping it and I hope you keep yours too. They are good cars.

10-4 little buddy!!!!
couldn't agree more. Colour coding a 2nd is the best thing u can do, it totally transformed my car from a dullish TS into one of the sweetest KS models on the road!!

hmm, do the SE's come with colour coded bumpers? or is that a Verada only feature?

Yeah the SE came with both body coloured F+R bumpers and body coloured side mirrors but I'm pretty sure (don't quote me on this) it still has a strip of grey through the side of the body.
