shes a TN 4 cyl auto wagon
got a slight flat spot under load

problem always in second gear going up a hill

no matter how much you put the foot down
it has no power in second gear
and only makes 2000 rpm and about 40 km/hr

In first gear it goes up to 4000 revs
same with third and overdrive no problem

on the flat has penty of speed

so no misses or hesitation the auto is good no slippage
no other problems

has a TP inlet manifold std everything else
running ethanol or unleaded so mixed

any ideas ?

Is it fuel injected or carburettor?

EFI
on a flat road second performs normally
and kicks down and changes up within spec

Have you tried any of the following ?

fuel injector cleaner, and
checked the fuel pump pick up pipe strainer & fuel filter for blockages

Cheers

checked the fuel pump etc but not the filter

I do use ethanol so you may have something there
keep you posted

If you change out the filter it's worth cutting the old one open to have a looksee at how dirty it is. Also try running the car through a tankfull of unleaded (no ethanol blends) to see if it makes any difference.

That's weird. I don't understand how the gear it is in should affect the power of the engine unless it is changing up too early both from 1st to 2nd and from 2nd to third. In that case, it might never get into the engine's peak torque band when in 2nd gear.

Both of mine, carby auto and efi auto, will easily pull 5,500 rpm in 1st and 2nd. (they are both TP, so have the advantage of the dual mode auto.)

Perhaps you need to adjust the tps to get the auto to change up later (i.e. at a higher throttle position). When you on the flat, you probably use less throttle than up hill, so the problem is more noticeable when going up hill.

Idle Stepper Control ? Another funny thing I have found is, in the old days if you had water in your fuel you would put metho (ETHANOL) in so you could run it through, downside is if you are continually fuelling up with an e10 blend (nearly all base unleaded these days) it attracts water. I figure for the extra 8 cents a litre the quality of BP ultimate 98 or Caltex vortex 95/98 RON and the extra economy I get I would NEVER USE e10 again.

there was eneough water in the fuel filter
to slow the flow of fuel on a hill

stopped using ethanol 10 now

took the TN on two x 2 hr highway runs to flush it out(burn out the gunk)

still wont idle steady when cold

will try and another air flow meter to see if it idles steady
and I have a set of blue injectors I can fit ( thanks to Old Fart:thumbsup:)
