View Full Version : Which high oct gasoline?

For people who have tuned their engines for hi oct gas.
Do you have a preference and why?
Variations in fuel from same station/brand?
Apparently Turbo Subaru Forum ppl recommend Ultimate only.
I have heard "horror stories" about variations in hi oct - are they selling us E10 with price of 98?

When my KJ was tuned for 98 octane i usually ran Mobil Synergy 8000 as it responded better than BP Ultimate. Every engine will be different so you may have to try 2 or 3 different fuels until you find the 98 octance that suits you best. Then again you may not notice any difference between different brands of 98 octane fuel (as i've found with my untuned VY SS).

I have ran both Mobil and BP 98 octane fuels. It feels exactly the same on the both of those. However i was recommended the BP ultimate by Steve Knight so thats the fuel i generally buy unless there is no BP to be found.
I've been running BP 98 for 1 yr. now without any problems.

Im not SKR turned, but my engine does have a rather large hunger for 98 Octane.
I found that BP Ultimate performs the best - seems to last a fraction longer as well over Caltex Vortex 98.
as well as slightly better performance and econ (if thats currently possible right now?)
I wont run to the other side of town (where the BP with ultimate is...) if i only need a small amount of fuel, but I pass it every day to and from work, so it works out well there :)
When i was NA and untuned, I again found that BP Ultimate was working the best in my car (lets NOT start the war of how my car wasnt set up to take full advantage of it please?)
Personally, I hate with PASSION, the E10 fuels - its been in the car twice by mistake (only smally top ups not full fills) since i brought it, and the car performed like a soggy sponge.
I just refuse to use it in any car. :)

Funny how no-one has mentioned Shell V-Power yet.
I use it exclusively in my car, and have never had a problem with it. Good power and AFAICT reasonably good fuel economy. Although I'm starting to think that due to my missing cats and relocated O2 sensors the O2 sensors think I'm running too lean and they keep telling the ECU to reduce the AFRs, i.e. make the mixture a bit richer. Based on slowly deteriorating fuel consumption figures per the trip computer and a couple of recent CEL codes. Hopefully this will be fixed when Steve Knight fits & tunes my ChipTorque Exede, fingers crossed next week some time.
I can't really comment on how V-Power compares with other 98 RON brands as I hardly ever use them. Other main reason I use V-Power is that I do all my grocery shopping at a particular Coles so I need to use Shell to get the 4c/litre discount.
On another thread I read that my local United now has Premium 100 so I might give that a try (although it is E10 and some here have not had a good experience with E10).
See this page http://www.unitedpetroleum.com.au/distributor-premium100-locations.asp for the list of United Premium 100 outlets (a lot more than last time i checked a couple of months ago).

Seeing as I have a servo on my street, I use Shell V power.
Caltex is just gross. Have run BP ultimate a few times and noticed no real difference. I'll run both happily, But 80% of the time I use shell V power

if not i'll use either v power or bp ultimate.
I will never use Caltex! Junk Junk Junk!

Good feedback ppl! 2314 hrs NY Eve and I'm thinking of gasoline. Bad?
Didn't elaborate my experiences much, but noticed long ago that E10 just isn't made for us - 'gusting stuff. Also Caltex 98 Vortex seemed instantly sluggish - unless a specific tune (unlikely!!) was required. I use V Power for same reason - the discount 4c plus Tue/Wed fill up near-by and save 20odd cents /L.
But mostly Ultimate seems to get the votes. Pity about the price though.
Back to booze now....
Happy NY all.

BP and shell 98 come from the same refinery
Killer

Doee that mean they have the exact properties?
BP and shell 98 come from the same refinery
fuel from refineries never has the same properties and varies all the time if different levels of aromatics are added, particularly seasonal variations.
BP and shell 98 come from the same refinery
not sure where you heard that, but BP and Shell have their own seperate refineries across australia with all types being produced at each one. Kwinana is run by BP and they process BP fuel for smaller chains, and likewise Shell with refineries in Geelong and Clyde.

Just to add some actual scienctific (cough) testing results to this thread.
We've tested Shell V-Power and BP Ultimate for the last 6 months in our Ralliart Colt to see which fuel had the better fuel economy. Filling the car with 5 tanks in a row of each fuel to get a true reading, and doing the same or very similar driving each time (my fiances work trip)
The results were as follows:
Shell V-Power: Ranged from 7.6-7.9L/100km average.
BP Ultimate: Ranged from 6.9-7.2L/100km.
Take from that what you will, but there is a definite difference even when driving the car running it on BP Ultimate, to me anyway. The economy figures are there to back it up too. It would be good to get back to back dyno runs done.

Wouldn't hurt to do your own testing. We found it works best for us, so we use it.

Bike owners run BP Ultimate exclusively. Octane changes are very noticable the less cylinders you have and more revving you do. Mobil 8000 was also popular but too hard to get in the Hunter Valley now with Darky selling out to Liberty etc.

I being running V power mainly but I will switch for the next couple of weeks and see

i have thought that Ultimate was giving slightly better consumption figures, tho i never recorded it nor did any consistant testing... but BPs are out of the way for me so I just settle for V-Power.

Quite conclusive test with obvious results - ruffly 10% difference! Can't dispute that.
But keep in mind this test was for that engine. Food - ammhh, fuel for thought there truly!
But like many, Shell is convenient for me and BP always seems to be bit expensive on my way. But - few bucks a month, perhaps not worth to whinge.
