Hi all.

Searched a few threads which gave part answers but were not ES specific

Just wondering if 17" wheels are legal in Victoria on a TL ES which came stock with 15"

I am looking to upgrade to alloys and would like to eke it out to 17's if I can but am concerned re the legality and whether this would cause any grief on my auto trans.

I understand there is a 15mm rule in Vic so would a lower profile on a 17" wheel be OK

17" Should be fine mate. Considering the TJ VRX came with 17" and im sure the TW did as well.

From what ive heard around its up to 17" which are legal? Im sure someone will correct me

Cheers mate. I do think it depends on what your models tyre placard states but I just saw a TR with 18's which was legal down at Paynesville

Having a look around the Vicroads website, it appears they (like other states) use the rule mentioned in the OP. You can put larger diameter rims on as long as the rolling diameter of the wheel/tyre is +/- 15mm compared to stock, which is achieved through lower profile tyres. There's no mention of the 2" rule so don't worry about it.

I'd give thought to 18" wheels though, 17"s don't look too bad but imo 18" is the sweet spot for aftermarket rims.

Perfectly said. ;)

For the price vs looks, 18"s are where its at. 17"s unless the TL/TW VRX ones just look too small on a 3rd gen.

Great info guys. 17's may do it for me as my insurer (and employer) allows up to 2" larger than stock before you cop loadings. 17x7's should look good enough.

Like the look of the CSA Dominators and Speedy Obsession which both have good looks and similar offsets

Still wondering whether the change will impact the auto trans, as was mentioned to me by a tyre centre manager. Not sure how ehis could adversely affect the tranny.

Yeah I've never heard anything of the type? Impact the trans? it'll impact the trans if the driven wheels are of different diameters.

I'd also look at the 380 VRX wheels. Stock looking and a classy rim. Look into it

The only thing I can think of is maybe a higher unsprung weight, meaning the car, and in turn the transmission, would have to work harder to move the car. But having said that, that is complete nonsense.

17's will look good. Agreed 18's are the sweet spot for Magnas, but if you can only get 17's then so be it. Depending on how much comfort you want, you'll be looking at either a 225/50/17 tyre, or a 235/45/17 tyre, with a 95 load rating.

Yeah the 380 VRX rims are nice units.

Thanks heaps for all the input, I knew the Mitsi brotherhood would have the answers :)

Got it done at BJ's - went the package deal on 17" RJR Champs and Maxxis MA-V1's for $1149
Early doors very happy with the tyres as I am used to C Drives, and happy it hasn't made the car look to lairy
